Companies across all industries rely on decision support tools, techniques, and models to help them assess and resolve everyday business questions. The decision support system is data-driven, as the entire process feeds off of the collection and availability of data to analyze. Business Intelligence (BI) reporting tools, processes, and methodologies are key components to any decision support system and provide end users with rich reporting, monitoring, and data analysis.PowerPoint Presentation: A decision support system (DSS) is a computer-based information system that supports business or organizational decision-making activities. DSSs serve the management, operations, and planning levels of an organization and help to make decisions, which may be rapidly changing and not easily specified in advance . DSSs include knowledge-based systems . A properly designed DSS is an interactive software-based system intended to help decision makers compile useful information from a combination of raw data, documents, personal knowledge, or business models to identify and solve problems and make decisions . DSS is much more than just a DBMS and knowledge componentDecision Making as a Component of Problem Solving: Decision Making as a Component of Problem Solving Intelligence Design Choice Implementation Monitoring Problem solving Decision makingTypes Of DSS: Types Of DSS Communication driven Data driven Document driven Knowledge driven Model drivenPowerPoint Presentation: A communication-driven DSS supports more than one person working on a shared task; examples include integrated tools like Microsoft's NetMeeting. A data-driven DSS or data-oriented DSS emphasizes access to and manipulation of a time series of internal company data and, sometimes, external data. A document-driven DSS manages, retrieves, and manipulates unstructured information in a variety of electronic formats. A knowledge-driven DSS provides specialized problem-solving expertise stored as facts, rules, procedures, or in similar structures. A model-driven DSS emphasizes access to and manipulation of a statistical, financial, optimization, or simulation model. Model-driven DSS use data and parameters provided by users to assist decision makers in analyzing a situation; they are not necessarily data-intensive.Fundamental Components of a DSS Architecture: Fundamental Components of a DSS Architecture The Database or Knowledge base The Model (i.e., the decision context and user criteria) The User Interface. The users themselves are also important components of the architecture.Importance Of DSS: Importance Of DSS Improves personal efficiency Speed up the process of decision making Increases organizational control Encourages exploration and discovery on the part of the decision maker Speeds up problem solving in an organization Facilitates interpersonal communication Promotes learning or training Generates new evidence in support of a decision Creates a competitive advantage over competition Reveals new approaches to thinking about the problem space Helps automate managerial processesPowerPoint Presentation: Classifying DSS Inputs: Factors, numbers, and characteristics to analyze User Knowledge and Expertise: Inputs requiring manual analysis by the user. Outputs: Transformed data from which DSS "decisions" are generated Decisions: Results generated by the DSS based on user criteriaPowerPoint Presentation: Characteristics DSS Support managers at all level Support for decision makers in semi structured and unstructured problems Data access Support for independent or sequential decision Support variety of decision processes Support modeling and analysis DSS must be interactive and provide ease of use Complete control by decision makers Performs different types of analyses “What-if” analysis Simulation Analysis Goal-seeking analysisPowerPoint Presentation: Quality may be low May have lack of documentation Security risks may increase Risks of DCSDecision Support System: Decision Support System Advantages User and management involvement Learning explicitly integrated Prototyping bypasses information requirement Short intervals between iterations Low cost Improved user understanding of system Short delivery time User requirements specifications are eliminated Reduced implementation problems Low costs Disadvantages Changing requirements May not have thorough understanding of benefits and costs Poorly tested Dependencies, security, and safety may be ignored High uncertainty Problem may get lost Reduction in quality Higher costs due to multiple productions 6- 13Tools of Decision Support System: Tools of Decision Support System Computer-aided software design tools Upper CASE Lower CASE Integrated CASE RAD design tools Enterprise class repository and collaboration UML modeling Analysis and design software Code debugging methods Testing and quality assurance tools 6- 14DSS Technology Levels: DSS Technology Levels DSS primary tools Fundamental elements Programming languages, graphics, editors, query systems DSS generator (engine) Integrated software package for building specific DSS Modeling, report generation, graphics, risk analysis Specific DSS DSS application that accomplishes the work DSS primary tools are used to construct integrated tools that are used to construct specific tools 6- 15PowerPoint Presentation: 6- 16Decision Support System: Decision Support System Hardware PCs to multiprocessor mainframes Software Involves multiple criteria Develop in house, outsource, or buy off the shelf Off the shelf software rapidly updated; many on market Prices fluctuate Different tools available 6- 17THANK YOU : THANK YOU You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
