Marquez Guadalupe Estrello Donna Hedges NURS 5348 Ms. Monsivais April 2008 Slide 2: Do you believe you need and would benefit from training about students with disabilities? According to a study in 2002, so do 88 faculty members surveyed. On their ability to teach, supervise and accommodate students with disabilities in clinical settings, faculty rated themselves 2.53 on a scale of 1 to 6. (Sowers & Smith, 2004) Slide 3: Sixty-one faculty knew current or former nurses who experienced disabilities. Sixty-three faculty currently had or previously had students with disabilities. The study concluded that faculty attitudes toward nursing students with disabilities serves as a barrier to these students (p. 217). This presentation is designed to raise your awareness to the needs of students with learning disabilities. It is in no way a complete representation of all that is necessary to understand the magnitude of learning disabilities. The Law : The Law Rehabilitation Act of 1973: No otherwise qualified handicapped individual Can be excluded from participating Be denied benefits Be discriminated against …under any program receiving federal financial assistance. This includes all aspects of educational life. No student can be excluded from a course or major solely because of a learning disability. The Law : The Law American Disabilities Act of 1990: Secondary or post secondary courses and exams must be offered in a manner accessible to students with disabilities This includes standardized tests and licensing examinations The Law : The Law Individuals With Disabilities Education Act of 1990: Covers students up to their 22nd birthday Free, appropriate education within the least restrictive environment Transition plan by age 16 Vocational programs Assistance with understanding What a learning disability is Their type of disability How it affects learning Identification of their strengths How to be successful in academic environment Disabled Student Services at UTEP : Disabled Student Services at UTEP “Provides individuals with disabilities equal access and opportunity through empowerment, support, resources, advocacy, collaboration and outreach throughout the university and community, so that students can participate freely and actively in all facets of university life.” Disabled Student Services Office Pamphlet (2006) Teaching and Learning Issues : Teaching and Learning Issues Safety and monitoring in clinical setting Reading textbooks, handouts and lecture notes Listening and hearing lectures Seeing items on board or overheads Test taking and grading Strategies to Assist Students with Learning Disabilities : Strategies to Assist Students with Learning Disabilities Official “note taker” Use of tape recorders; copy of lecture Teacher’s notes or slides Provide copies Read material out loud Summarize each section Strategies to Assist Students with Learning Disabilities : Strategies to Assist Students with Learning Disabilities One on one time between student and teacher for individualized planning and instruction Classmates willing to assist individuals with disabilities Extra time for or proctored exams Your Turn : Your Turn Please discuss your ideas or experience on ways you can help facilitate the learning process for students with learning disabilities Your Turn : Your Turn What strategies of assessment of learning could you employ?
