“ Mum, don’t spoil the planet I will be living for your convenience ! ” Choose Green For Your Baby Future

Slide 2:

Abstract Disposable diapers are the 3rd largest single consumer item in landfills, and represent 30% of non-biodegradable waste. Billions tons of diapers filled with feces and other body excretions go to landfills where they take about 500 years to decompose. As a good citizens we must take action to use different form of diapers. We must do what is necessary to save the environment for the future generations to live.

Slide 3:

Pollution on Underground Water and Methane emission from waste (Increase CO2)

Slide 4:

We’re dumping almost 7 billion lbs of diapers onto our landfill each year. That’s the weight of more than 8,000 fully fueled, fully loaded 747s

Problem : Decomposition :

Problem : Decomposition Even some manufacturer’s claim that their diaper are 85% biodegradable Most are rolled into tight little balls (plastics bag) and put in sealed landfills Without air and water, it take about 500 years for the diaper to decompose Can we compost them? Plastic is non compostable Malaysia has Zero facilities that could do this composting

Toxic Chemical in Disposable Diaper :

Toxic Chemical in Disposable Diaper  Dioxin  Sodium Polyacrylate  Tributyl-tin (TBT)  Xylene, ethylbenzene, styrene, isopropylene are release from disposable diaper

Dioxins :

Dioxins Listed by the EPA as the most toxic of cancer related chemicals Where are they come from ? Dioxin is a byproduct of the chlorine bleaching process What do they do? They get into the air, then soil and water, and then our food chain They attach and accumulate in our fat cells Dioxin is passed onto our children Through placenta, and breastfeeding We cant defense because it is not metabolized in our bodies It can cause serious health problems at parts per trillion (www.acereport.org, 2003)

Harmful Effects of Dioxin :

Harmful Effects of Dioxin Causes cancer Disrupts hormones May shrink penis size and sperm count Miscarriage, reproductive disorders, birth defects, low birth weight Learning disabilities Short term memory and attention span Damage to nervous and immune systems (www.acereport.org,2003)

Slide 10:

Sodium polyacrylate Sodium polyacrylate also named acrylic sodium salt polymer, (because of its ability to absorb as much as 200 to 300 times its mass in water) is a polymer widely used in disposable baby diapers. These cross-linked acrylic polymers are also named as "Super Absorbents" in disposable baby diapers.[1]

Slide 11:

Sodium polyacrylate Why is it Dangerous? This chemical was removed by the FDA from tampons because of its link to toxic shock syndrome. SAP can cause allergic reactions, and is lethal to cats if inhaled. Death has occurred from ingestion of just 5 grams of this chemical. Pediatric journals contain reports of this chemical sticking to babies’ genitals. When the baby’s skin gets wet, this super absorber can pull natural moisture from the top layer of baby’s skin. Employees of disposable diaper factories suffered from tiredness, female organ problems, slow-healing wounds and weight loss.

Slide 12:

Tributyltin (TBT) TBT is used as a catalyst in the production process of certain plastics or as a stabiliser in PVC. • A baby wearing five diapers a day could be in contact with up to 3.6 times the World Health Organisation's estimated tolerable daily intake. • Greenpeace Germany have evidence that TBT can leech out of things, such as plastics. TBT shouldn't be in any household product, let alone something that is being worn next to babies skin. The fear is it could be absorbed into the body and disrupt the child's hormonal sex balance.

Harmful Effects of Wearing Disposable Diapers :

Harmful Effects of Wearing Disposable Diapers Diaper Rash Caused by allergies to chemicals and less diaper changes because diaper is so absorbent it feels dry Infertility in Males temperature of the scrotum was almost 2 F higher from wearing diapers and may not develop normally (Sanders, 2001) Toxic Shock Syndrome In 1986, a 13 month old Missouri boy and NY girl both died allegedly from wearing disposable diapers (Swasy, 1993) Ashtma A study found that lab mice exposed to various brands of disposable diapers experienced asthma-like symptoms, as well as eye, nose, and throat irritation. (Anderson Laboratories 1999)

According to the Journal of Pediatrics :

According to the Journal of Pediatrics 54% of one-month old babies using disposable diapers had rashes. Of those 16% were severe rashes.

Toxic Shock Syndrome :

Toxic Shock Syndrome 42 women died from wearing XXX’s tampon (pulled from market in 1982) Symptoms The tampons created a haven for bacteria which produced deadly toxins High fever, sunburn like rash, vomiting Victim’s skin peels off hands and feet Lungs fill with fluid until suffocation, heart stops beating Those cellulose materials found in tampon also found in disposable diapers

Slide 16:

Mum, Is there a Better Alternative To Existing Disposable Diapers ?

Slide 17:

Kangeroo® Eco Diaper Made of organic bamboo fiber Reusable & Washable Natural anti-microbial properties No toxic Chemical Leak free with waterproof layer Ref : www.kangeroo.my

Slide 18:

Best use with liner at daytime before baby going to poos Cost Save of 66% compare with disposable  Faster Potty Trained Ref : www.kangeroo.my Kangeroo® Eco Diaper

Slide 19:

66 % Cost Saving Over Disposable The average child goes through 7200 diapers from birth to about age three. You need to spend about RM5760 per child for 3 years using disposable, With Eco Diapers, you only need 43 pcs over a three years period. It will cost less than RM2000 per child for 3 years. Total Saving is about 66% of over disposable diapers.

YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR CHILDREN PLANET :

YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR CHILDREN PLANET The disposable diaper doesn’t just originate at the store and then end up in the garbage. By examining the cycle, we see that the disposable diaper is harmful at every stage in its life. To the environment when produce, to the baby and back to environments. Most people who use these disposable diapers are impacted in the smallest ways, with a minor diaper rash being the only clue that diapers are not healthy. The other impacts were mostly invisible to us. All that harm for what ? A product that is used for a few hours and then unsafely thrown out as a ball of plastic and feces to sit for 500 years. You are responsible for the way your childrens will live in future.
