The origins of Snow Brand was incorprated in 1950, as farmers' cooperative formed in Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan. The cooperative was set up to help farmers in Hokkaidovc market their dairy products. It had more than 200 distribution centers across Japan and most of these distributed frozen food. Over the years Snow Brand added many products and services to its portfolio, which included baby food, medical supplies, packing materials, marketing, etc. INTRODUCTION

To run each of its businesses separately, Snow Brand incorporated various wholly and partially owned subsidiaries. It expanded its businesses to other countries such as China, Taiwan,Hong Kong and France.

UNETHICAL PRACTICES Since June 2000, Snow Brand has been facing many problems. The company's problems started with food poisoning caused by its contaminated milk products. Subsequent investigations conducted by the govt. revealed many other alleged unethical practices inside the company.

FOOD POISONING The first of the alleged unethical practices that came to light was food poisoning. On June 27, 2000 people from Osaka, Wakayama, Hyogo, Nara, Okayama and Hiroshima prefectures in Western Japan, began to complain of illness after consuming Snow Brand's low fat milk. The victims suffered from diarrhea, stomach pain and vomiting and some of them needed to be hospitalized after consuming low fat milk produced.

Starting with the food poisoning in June 2000, Snow Brand had suffered many blows, which resulted in loss of reputation, loss of public trust in their products and financial losses. Snow Brand Food announced the that it would sell its food-additives business (additives and ingredients used in jellies, jams and other kinds of food) to trading company Nissho Iwai Corporatins.

JUDGEMENT On November 22, 2002, the Kobe District Court ruled that five former Snow Brand Food executives, including Hatakeyama, were guilty of fraud. The court believed that they conspired with Hiromi Sakurada , former senior managing director and Masami Inoue, former managing director of Snow Brand Food to commit the fraud. All five of them were sentenced to two years in jail but these jail terms were suspended.
