LOGISTICS :

LOGISTICS Its management of the flow of the goods, information and other resources in a repair cycle between the point of origin and the point of consumption in order to meet the requirements of customers. Logistics involves the integration of information, transportation, inventory, warehousing, material handling and packaging and occasionally security . SUPPLY CHAIN:

SUPPLY CHAIN Is a system of organizations ,people, technology, activities, information and resources involved in moving a product or services from supplier to customer. Supply chain activities transform natural resources, raw materials and components into finished product that is delivered to the end customer . In advanced supply chain systems , used products may re-enter the supply chain at any point where residual value is recyclable. Internal Supply chain Suppliers<---->Purchasing Production Distribution < --- >Customers <------------------------------------- -->

Supply chain Management :

Supply chain Management SCM – was developed in the 1980’s to express the need to integrate the key business processes ,from end user through original suppliers. Objective – is to fulfill customer demands through most efficient use of resources , including distribution capacity, inventory and labour. ** In theory supply chain seeks to match demand with supply and do so with minimal inventory .** Terms Supply Chain & Logistics :- Logistics applies to activities within one company/organization involving distribution of products. Supply chain also encompasses manufacturing & procurement and therefore has a much broader focus as it involves multiple enterprises e.g. suppliers, mgfs , retailors working together to meet customer need for product/service.

SCM Scenario – 1PL/2PL/3PL/4PL:

SCM Scenario – 1PL/2PL/3PL/4PL 1PL : can be a manufacturer, trader, buying office, importer/exporter, wholesaler, retailor and a distributor. institutions/Govt. Depts., NGO, military etc. 2PL :is an asset based carrier, which actually owns the means of the transportation. e.g. Shipping lines, Airlines trucking Co’s , rail companies ,ware house owners. 3PL: are one window solution provider for 1PL ,such as Freight forwarders or courier companies. Overlapping : 2PL can be 3PL at the same time . E.g. shipping companies owing FF , Airlines own GSA

Cont.:

Cont. Freight forwarder owns trucks or warehouse, courier company owns planes, trucks, warehouse . Advanced 3PL: or the total 3PL are in the market because logistics services stabilize customers longer than freight services. Famous names are DHL/Kuehne & Nagal,Schenkar,Panalpina,UPS,C.H.Robinson worldwide etc. 4PL : are independent, singularly accountable, non asset based as far as logistics, transportation & supply chain mgmt. are concerned. They are consulting firms e.g. Deloitte, Accenture, CPCS, SCMD etc. 4PL uses 2Pl&3PL to supply service to customer owning computer systems & intellectual capital.
