Swamps & Marshes:

Swamps & Marshes A swamp is an area of land, usually fairly large, that is always wet and is overgrown with various shrubs and trees. Can you guess what kind of trees these are? You guessed it – Cypress trees! What’s that stuff hanging down? Spanish Moss

Slide 5:

A marsh is an area of low-lying waterlogged land, often beside water, that is poorly drained and liable to flood, difficult to cross on foot, and unfit for growing or building. The swamps and marshes are both located in the Coastal Plains, but are very different.

Okefenokee Swamp:

Okefenokee Swamp * Is the largest swamp in North America *Was named by the Seminole Indians. The name means “Land of Trembling Earth”. *It used to be covered by the ocean. Now it has fresh water.

The Okefenokee has 4 land features.:

Clue #1: We live in the swamp prairie. This is an open area with shallow water and tall grass. Clue #2: We hunt for fish in the swamp. Clue #3: We have long pointed beaks that help us spear the fish in the shallow water. WHO ARE WE?

Clue #1: There are more of us in this area than there are people. Clue #2: I am a reptile. Clue #3: Some people use my skin to make shoes and purses. WHO AM I? Clue: 4: I am a carnivore.

Clue #1: You’ve seen us in other habitats of GA Clue #2: I am a reptile with no arms or legs. Clue #3: I am a mammal with rings around my eyes. WHO ARE WE? Clue: 4: I am an amphibian.

Clue #1: I am carnivorous! (That’s an adjective that means carnivore.) Clue #2: I eat bugs Clue #3: I get my nutrients from eating insects. WHO AM I? Clue: 4: I’m a plant!

I have leaves shaped like tubes. My leaves fill up with water to attract bugs. We are pitcher plants!

Slide 19:

I float on top of the water. I have tiny trigger hairs that the insect touches when it lands on me. I am a bladderwort! The trigger hairs are touched, I suck the bug in until it disappears.
