How to paraphrase and quote? :

How to paraphrase and quote? Paraphrasing is simply re-writing. Just re-write an expression of the writer you are quoting from. Do not forget referencing, of course!

Source: Çelikel: “Postmodernism is the product of the consumer logic of late capitalism.” (Çelikel, M. A. What is Postmodernism? Denizli: PAU Publications, 1953.) Quote I: In his book entitled What is Postmodernism?, Çelikel claims that postmodernism is “the product of the consumer logic of late capitalism” (82). Quote II: Çelikel argues that postmodernism is a result of the circumstances in the consumerist culture of late capitalism (82). Quote III: Postmodernism is argued to be the consequence of “the consumer logic of late capitalism” (Çelikel 82).

Let’s have Çelikel’s book as an example again. If you use two books by the same author one of which is published in 1953 and the other in 1960, the year of publication is also included within the parenthesis. For Quote I, the explanation within the parenthesis will, then, be (1953:82). For Quote II, (1953:82) For Quote III, (Çelikel, 1953:82).

When quoting more than one sentence from a certain author without paraphrasing, then the quotation should be indented. For example: Postmodernism has been in the centre of literary arguments since the early fifties. However, the critiques have never been in agreement about whether it should be regarded as an artistic or as a political phenomenon. As, for instance, Çelikel argues, postmodernism is: the product of the consumer logic of late capitalism. It comes out as a result of the cultural hybridity and cultural collage caused by the aggressive capitalist enterprises that remove the virtual borders between cultures. (1953:82) One might assume that, if the above claims are taken to be true, the phenomenal postmodernism may not be regarded merely as a literary term.

Parenthetical documentation allows you to acknowledge a source within your text by providing a reference to exactly where you found that information, so that your readers can follow the complete reference listed on the Bibliography page at the end of your paper. In most cases, providing the author’s last name and a page number are sufficient: In response to rapid metropolitan expansion, urban renewal projects sought “an order in which more significant kinds of conflict, more complex and intellectually stimulating kinds of disharmony, may take place” (Mumford 485).

If there are two or three authors, include the last name of each: (Winks and Kaiser 176) (Choko, Bourassa, and Baril 258-263)

If there are more than three authors, include the last name of the first author followed by “et al.” without any intervening punctuation: (Baldwin et al. 306)

If the author is mentioned in the text, only the page reference needs to be inserted: According to Postman, broadcast news influences the decision-making process (51-63).
