Personal Health History:

Personal Health History How I got my name: My parents went to an Irish band concert while my mom was pregnant with me and the bassist’s name was Caitlin and she thought it was pretty so she wanted to name me that. Meaning/Origin: The meaning of Caitlin is supposedly “pure” but I’m far from it. The origin is actually Irish for Catherine and I was named for St. Catherine (my family is Catholic) I was born on May 2, 1994 in Blackstone, Massachusetts and lived there until I was 5 ½ and we moved out here.

Family Health History cont.:

Family Health History cont. Interview with my grandpa: 1. What was health care like back when you were growing up in the 30s and 40s? A: Not as advanced as now, it was provided for soldiers mainly in the 40s. 2. What was World War 2 like for you? A: My family was affected mainly because we lived in Manhattan. 3. What was health care like in the 50s and 60s? A: Everybody could pay for it because America was one of the successors of the war and it was more advanced, but still not as much as today. 4. What was providing for a family of 8 like in the 70s? A: Our youngest was not as wild as the others, but they all got into some sort of trouble and it was more expensive since our family was so big. 5. What did you do in the Vietnam War? A: I was deployed in China but I never actually fought in Vietnam. 6. Did you know your family was doing okay? A: Yes, I wrote them letters every chance I got. 7. What was the Cold War like? A: Not as terrifying for us as for others, we lived in California by that point but the Cuban Missile Crisis was pretty scary. 8. Did you expect any radiation from bombs that could be drop affect you? A: No, they were closer to the East Coast and we weren’t the capital.

Family Health History cont.:

Family Health History cont. 9. What were vaccines like when they first came out? A: Everybody scrambled to get them, they were a promise for a better health future. 10. What was health care like in the 70s and 80s? A: With all the new technology due to the races we did have more opportunities and more advanced care but again, not as advanced as today. 11. What was health care like in the 90s? A: They started having debates about it then and still are, and the Cold War sparked new technologies that could be possible. 12. What did you think of communism? A: Like every other American at the time we opposed it but weren’t afraid of it overruling our nation. 13. What did/do you think of terrorism? A: Just like communism. I don’t hate Middle Easterns but the group of them should be stopped. 14. What did you think of the 9/11 attacks? A: I lived in New York so it was personal to me but there was nothing I could do about it. 15. What do you think of Obama’s health care reform? A: He’s not really doing anything and I don’t care for him anyway so I don’t really think anything of it. 16. How has health care changed since you were a kid? A: It’s definitely gotten more advanced but there is still room for growth.

Family Health History cont.:

Family Health History cont. 17. What do you think of Obama in general? A: I would have preferred that he wouldn’t have been elected president but it’s too late now. 18. What did you think of Hitler? A: My parents opposed him and I did too but we were German so we were prejudiced at the time. 19. What did you think of Stalin? A: He was a mad man and deserved no political position. 20. What did you think of the radiation from the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki? A: We shouldn’t have bombed them, they might not have gotten that letter. 21. What did you think of the Civil Rights Movement? A: We supported it because everyone deserves equality in America. 22. What was education like when you were a kid? A: Not everyone went to school but a lot did because the depression didn’t affect 75% of America. 23. What was education like for my dad and uncles? A: They learned a lot more than we did and had new opportunities and new classes. 24. What did you think of the music changes in history? A: I liked jazz, but I didn’t like the new music as much. 25. Do you think there can be improvements in health? A: Definitely.

Unique Self cont.:

Unique Self cont. This song represents me because for scattered years between 1 st and 10 th grade I was bullied for being different or, like the song says, a “loser”. I chose to be different because it wasn’t worth being a clone of everyone else. Those people don’t matter anymore (and are actually why I transferred to MC) and won’t ever even if they end up working for me.

Future Aspirations:

Future Aspirations One person that has made a positive impact on my life: George Lundie . I’ve been suffering from depression and low self-esteem for almost two years now and when I met this boy he made me believe I was beautiful and doesn’t fail to tell me every day, even though I tell him there are more beautiful people than me. Although I say this, he tells me that it’s not true and I’m the most beautiful person in the world but I think it’s a lie. He’s helped me grow into a better person and I thank him for that.

Future Aspirations cont. - Letter:

Future Aspirations cont. - Letter Dear George, I cannot thank you enough for all that you have done these past 5 ½ months, 24 weeks, and 166 days. (Yes our 24 week isn’t until Wednesday but I have to write this today, hahaha ) You have made me feel beautiful and spectacular when other people made me feel ugly and unworthy. I feel like I’ve found the one person who I’ll hold and cherish the rest of my life. It’s like…when I told you about you being in random dreams before I even met you, well, that’s true . I even had dreams of you when Alex and I were dating and I was scared of losing him but honestly? When he and I broke up I was kind of relieved that he wasn’t that much in my life anymore and that I wouldn’t be pressured into having sex with him or being yelled at by him. When I met you I had this epiphany thing like, you were going to be the one. And even though we didn’t talk for like 2 months after we first met, we became close friends after that Scripps Ranch conversation and about half a month later we went out and that made me feel in love for the first time in my life. About two months before we started dating Alex kind of “came out of the closet” and even though we were broken up by then I was really hurt

Letter cont.:

Letter cont. that he had been cheating on me in our short, unreal, unmeaningful relationship. I had trust issues and still do, but I knew that you would never cheat on me and never hurt me and I still know that. I’ve been listening to Telling the World by Taio Cruz and the part when he starts singing the chorus? Turn all those “she’s” into “he’s” and you have, in a notch, how I’ve felt about you since the third day we were dating. So yeah I can’t think of anything else to say except I LOVE YOU :) Love, Katie Baer

Future Aspirations cont.:

Future Aspirations cont. In 3 years: I see myself finishing up community college and getting ready to transfer to UCSC or SDSU preferably or just any UC or CSU. I see myself living with George in an apartment and having a stable job to pay rent. In 5 years: I see myself finishing up college and getting ready to go to grad school to spend more time on my major (preferably moving to New York) and getting ready to spend the rest of my life with him. In 10 years: Depending on how long I have to study in grad school, I should still be in it. I’d be either married or getting ready to marry whoever I’ll marry.

Future Aspirations cont.:

Future Aspirations cont. If I could accomplish one thing in my life, it would have to be having a good paying job to support my family of preferably 5 or 6. I’ve always wanted to be a mom and support the house along with my husband, instead of only him supporting.

Media Awareness:

Media Awareness I do honestly kind of get influenced by the media but not because everybody’s wearing something, I wear the things I like. I like makeup and skinny jeans and vans and sandals and boots and things like that, but other than that I’m pretty different. I like to wear colorful clothes, Hot Topic things, anything that makes me feel different.
