Used mostly for counting. 1(one),2(two),3(three) and so on Then there are Ordinal numbers. These are used with dates, placement (ex: 1st,2nd,3rd, and so on) 1st,(first), 2nd(second), 3rd(third) Slide 3: Large numbers like 9,999,999 are pronounced as follows. Nine million, nine hundred ninety-nine thousand, nine hundred ninety-nine. numbers that use a (.) are usually pronounced like this 1.5 one “point” five or “one and a half” Telephone numbers like 555-5555, are pronounced five five five, five five five five. If the number has a 0 it is pronounced as (oh). Slide 4: The order of large numbers is as follows 0,000 thousand 000,000 million 000,000,000 billion 000,000,000,000 trillion Fractions : Fractions In many situations, small numbers like ½, ¼ and so on are used. ½ is pronounced as one half. ¼ is pronounced as one fourth, or one quarter. When a number like 2 is before the fraction: ex, 2 ½, is pronounced two and a half. Fraction answers : Fraction answers One half One quarter/ one fourth Three fourths / three quarters One and seven eighths Eighteen and five eighths One third Two thirds One eighth Time and date : Time and date Time expressions, such as 11:30, are pronounced eleven thirty. Times like 11:15,11:30, and 11:45 are given special names like (:15= quarter past ___, :30- half past and :45= quarter to) If there is a 0(zero) it too, like phone numbers is pronounced as ‘oh’. Ex 2:05 is pronounced two ‘oh’ five. Slide 8: The date, is written in many different ways, for ex. Monday October 26th(twenty-sixth). The correct way to say the date is Monday October twenty – sixth (and if the year is included like 2009, {two thousand nine} Five forty-five (quarter to six) Eleven Nine fifteen (quarter past nine) Ten ‘oh’ three Twelve fifty-five Twelve thirty (half past twelve) One thirty-five Twelve Two forty-nine January twenty-sixth sixteen hundred April twelfth eighteen ‘oh’ nine For Fun : For Fun Roman numerals were an old way of using numbers. I which looks like the letter ‘i’,(1). II=(2),III=(3)... IV is (4), V is (5). IX is (9), and X is (10). XX is (20) etc.. L is (50), XL is (40). So LX is ?????? C is for(100), XC would be (90).
