INFORMATIVE TRAVELS THE TAJ MAHAL The Taj Mahal was commissioned by Shah Jahan in 1631 to be built in the memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal a Persian princess who died giving birth to their 14th child Gauhara Begum. Constructon of the Taj Mahal began in 1632. The imperial court documentng Shah Jahans grief afer the death of Mumtaz Mahal illustrate the love story held as the inspiraton for Taj Mahal. INFORMATIVE TRAVELS FATHEPUR SIKRI According to contemporary historians Akbar took a great interest in the building of Fatehpur Sikri and probably also dictated its architectural style. Seeking to revive the splendours of Persian court ceremony made famous by his ancestor Timur Akbar planned the complex on Persian principles. But the infuences of his adopted land came through in the typically Indian embellishments. The easy availability of sandstone in the neighbouring areas of Fatehpur Sikri also meant that all the buildings here were made of the red stone. The Imperial Palace complex consists of a number of independent pavilions arranged in formal geometry on a piece of level ground a patern derived from Arab and central Asian tent encampments. In its entrety the monuments at Fatehpur Sikri thus refect the genius of Akbar in assimilatng diverse regional architectural infuences within a holistc style that was uniquely his own.
