RUMINANT Bloat:

RUMINANT Bloat By – TOUQEER AHMED

INTRODUCTION:

INTRODUCTION Bloat is a condition where rumen and reticulum are filled with gases of fermentation due to excessive intake of easily fermentable foods. Also known as Hoven , Ruminal tympany , or Meteorism . It is mainly a disease of ruminants. Occurs due to excessive production of Gas or physical obstruction.

Types:

Types Primary tympany Froathy Per acute Acute Sub acute Gaseous Acute Sub acute Secondary Gaseous Sub acute Chronic

etiology:

etiology Primary tympany : Excess of highly fermantable leguminous plants. Intake of immature protein of succulent plants. Excessive intake of cereal crops, potato , cabbage, etc.. Lack of fibrous food in ration. Drugs and toxins causing ruminal musculature stasis.

Contd..:

Contd.. Secondary tympany : Choke Stenosis of oesophagus Diaphragmatic hernia TRP.

Clinical findings:

Clinical findings Anorexia Enlargement of abdomen Dull and depressed animal Colic, kicking at belly Drum like sound on percussion Creptitating sound on palpation Cyanosis of mucous membranes Tachycardia

Contd..:

Contd.. Increased ruminal motility initially, followed by hypomotility , later on atony . Acidic ph of ruminal fluid

Nature of ruminal fluid:

Nature of ruminal fluid Increased Viscosity Sedimentation time Gas activity Bubble production Decreased Ph Density Break of bubbles Ascend of bubbles

Diagnosis:

Diagnosis On the clinical signs described above History of access to lush pasture Passing a stomach tube will distinguish between gassy and frothy bloat. If it’s gassy bloat a stomach tube passed into the rumen will allow the gas build-up to escape through the tube. No such gas is seen in frothy bloat.

treatment:

treatment First aid treatment Withdraw all foods and water Animals should be kept in a way so that anterior portion remains elevated over posterior. A wooden stick may be tied in mouth. Charcoal may be smeared over tongue.

Contd..:

Contd.. 2) Emergency treatment Trocarisation . Stomach tube or probang 3) Medicinal treatment Carminative mixture or antacid Oligogenous preparations Oil turpentine – 15-30 ml Oil linseed – 400-500 ml

Contd..:

Contd.. Mineral oil - 500 ml-1 ltr For prevention of fermentation anti zymotics may be given Acid carbolic – 5-10 ml orally Formalin – 10-30 ml These should be diluted with 150-300 ml of water.

Contd..:

Contd.. Antibiotic like penicilline 5-10 lack IU. and tetracycline 10-20 gm . Anti histamine Ca borogluconate

Contd..:

Contd.. For Froathy bloat Mineral oil or vegetable oil 500 ml to 1 ltr . Oil turpentine 30 -60 ml orally Methyl silicone 10-15% Ethylene dioxide 10-30 ml in 100 ml water Cresol 30 ml Poloxalene 25-50 gm Dimethicone susp . ( Bloatosil , Bloatonil )

Contd..:

Contd.. For recurrent tympany Correct ruminal ph Give fresh rumen fluid from other healthy cattle Exploratory rumenotomy Surgical correction of causes of secondary tympany .

Rx following recovery:

Rx following recovery Easily digestible food Adequate exersise Massage of riminal musculature Course of Vit B complex Preparations containing Pulv . Nuvvom , Ammon carb , Ginger etc Rumenotorics .
