Dental cleaning is generally recommended when there is an excessive build-up of tartar and plaque on your dog’s teeth. It is usually done under general anesthesia (same as when you go to your dentist) Tartar, plaque and calculus deposits are removed by scraping your dog’s teeth. Finally, polishing is done to prevent future bacterial accumulation (this removes pits in the enamel where bacteria amass).

Brush your dog’s teeth at least 4 times /week Use toothpaste specifically designed for your dog (age and condition) Use oral sprays/gels to help prevent plaque and tartar buildup. Dog toys may help too- they encourage your dogs to salivate, bite onto it and somehow help blood flow in the gums and break plaques.
