About Adam: Father : God (Gen. 1:27; 2:7). Mother : God (Gen. 1:27; 2:7). Spouse : Eve (Gen. 2:21). Sons : Cain, Abel, Seth, and unnamed sons . Daughters : Several unnamed daughters Meaning of his name : “Of the ground, dust”. Frequency of his name : Referred to 30 times. Occupation : Tiller of the ground. Place of birth : Inside the Garden of Eden Place of death : Outside Garden of Eden. Age at death : 930 (Gen. 5:5). Important fact about his life : He was the world’s first human being . 1 October 2011 5 Creation OrdersSlide 6: These eleven chapters are absolutely vital in rightly understanding the remaining 1178 in the Bible. If one accepts them at face value, he will have no difficulty concerning the rest of the Old and New Testament. This stage spans a period of some 2000 plus years. The three important men of this stage are Adam, Enoch, and Noah. The four important events are, the Creation, the Fall, the Flood, and the Tower of Babel. It gives us the first human to be created (Adam) and the first human to be born (Cain ). The glory of God in creation (Gen. 1:1) and the grace of God in salvation (Gen. 6:8) are both clearly seen. This stage describes the first marriage, the first murder, and the first promise of the Messiah. The Creation order (Genesis 1-11) Who Wrote Genesis? Ancient Hebrew and Christian traditions say that Moses, guided by God, composed Genesis from ancient documents that were already in existence in his day. The book of Genesis ends about 300 years before Moses. Moses could have received this information only by direct revelation from God, or through such historical records as had been handed down from his forefathers. 1 October 2011 6 Creation OrdersCreation order chart – Genesis 1-11: Creation order chart – Genesis 1-11 ORIGIN OF ALL THINGS Six Days of Creation One Day of Rest SIN OF ADAM Subtlety of Satan Sin of Adam Redemption of God Martyrdom of Abel Ministry of Enoch FLOOD OF NOAH Conditions Before the Flood Salvation Through the Flood The Tragedy After the Flood TOWER OF BABEL The Arrogance of Man The Judgment of God The Origin of Nations 2000 YEARS 1 October 2011 7 Creation OrdersSlide 8: Creation - Origin of all things— Genesis 1–2 The correlation of these days First Three Days: Provide the backdrop for the creation story Last Three Days: Provide the actual actors in the creation story The Backdrop The Actors Day 1 Light Day 4 Sun, Moon, and Stars Day 2 Firmament and Water Day 5 Fowl and Fish Day 3 Land and Vegetation Day 6 Animals and Man The Days of Creation First Day: Light, Genesis 1:2–5 Second Day: The Expanse, Genesis 1:6–8 Third Day: Land and Vegetation, Genesis 1:9–13 Fourth Day: Sun, Moon, and Stars, Genesis 1:14–19. Genesis 1:1: In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1 1:1 When, who, and what? The Bible’s very first verse tells us that a supernatural being brought the universe into existence: • When? “In the beginning . . .” • Who? “. . . God . . .” • What? “. . . created the heavens and the earth.” It is a simple statement of fact. While the verses that follow provide many details about God’s creative activity, they do not explain it in scientific terms. Believers accept it “by faith” (Heb. 11:3). The Wonders of Genesis 1:1 1:1 Tells us what God did. 1:2-2:25 Tells us how he did it. This is a summarization statement “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” It is also a refutation statement Philosophy Refuted: How Refuted: Atheism There is a God Polytheism There is but one God Pantheism He created all things Evolutionism He is apart from his creation Materialism Matter itself was created Existentialism There was a purpose to creation 1 October 2011 9 Creation OrdersAdam - Chronological Summary: Adam - Chronological Summary I. Inside the Garden of Eden A. His divinity 1. He was created directly by God (Gen. 1:27). 2. He was made in God’s image (Gen. 1:26-27). 3. He was formed from the dust of the ground (Gen. 2:7). B. His duties 1. He was placed in Eden by God (Gen. 2:8-14). 2. He was commanded to work and take care of Eden (Gen. 2:15). 3. He was given dominion over all creatures (Gen. 1:26, 28). 4. He was commanded to increase in number (Gen. 1:28). 5. He named all the animals (Gen. 2:19-20). 6. He was the source for Eve’s creation (Gen. 2:21). 7. He was allowed to eat of any tree in the Garden except one (Gen. 1:29; 2:16-17). 8. He was forbidden to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Gen. 2:17). John warned believers about three temptations: “the lust for physical pleasure, the lust for everything we see, and pride in our possessions” (1 John 2:16). Satan subjected Eve to all three: • Eve saw that the fruit looked delicious (lust for physical pleasure); • That it “looked so fresh” (lust for everything we see); • And that it “would make her so wise” (pride). Satan tempted Jesus in a similar way (Matt. 4:1-11). 1 October 2011 10 Creation OrdersAdam - Chronological Summary cont.: Adam - Chronological Summary cont. C. His disobedience —He disobeyed God and ate of the forbidden tree (Gen. 3:6). D. His despair Adam realized his spiritual nakedness and tried to hide it from God by sewing fig leaves together (Gen. 3:7). He was judged by God (Gen. 3:17-19). A curse was placed upon the ground. By sweat and sorrow he would till the ground. At the end, he would return to the ground. His deliverance He was promised a future Saviour (Gen. 3:15). He was forgiven and clothed with animal skins by God himself (Gen. 3:21). He named his wife Eve, meaning “mother of all living.” F. His departure — Adam was driven from Eden, lest he eat of the tree of life and live forever in his sin (Gen. 3:22-23). II. Outside the Garden of Eden He fathered another son, Seth, in addition to several unnamed sons and daughters (Gen. 4:25; 5:4) He was 130 at the birth of Seth (Gen. 5:3). He died at the age of 930 (Gen. 5:5). 1 October 2011 11 Creation OrdersEve - Summary - Meaning: “Life, life-giving”: Eve - Summary - Meaning: “Life, life-giving” I. Her creation by God A. She was created (like Adam) in the image of God (Gen. 1:27). B. She was taken from the side of Adam (Gen. 2:22). C. She was married to Adam (Gen. 2:24-25). D. She was named by Adam (Gen. 3:20). II. Her corruption by Satan A. The reason for her sin 1. The falsehood—Satan urged Eve to disobey God and eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, promising her she would not die. “God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil” (Gen. 3:5). 2. The fascination—Eve saw that the tree was good for food, pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desired to make one wise (Gen. 3:6). 3. The fall—“She took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat” B. The reaction to her sin 1. She attempted to cover her nakedness 2. She attempted to hide from God 3. She attempted to blame the serpent C. The results of her sin 1. She would suffer pain in childbirth 2. She would be ruled over by her husband III. Her conceptions by Adam A. First son—Cain (Gen. 4:1)—Eve’s statement: “I have gotten a man from the Lord .” B. Second son—Abel (Gen. 4:2)—Eve’s statement: Not recorded C. Third son—Seth (Gen. 4:25)—Eve’s statement: “God... hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.” 1 October 2011 12 Creation OrdersCorruption - Sin of Adam — Genesis 3–5: Corruption - Sin of Adam — Genesis 3–5 A. The subtlety of Satan He speaks through the serpent. He begins by doubting God’s Word. He ends by denying God’s Word. B. The sin of Adam He becomes the first human sinner. Chronologically, Eve ate first, but theologically, Adam is declared by the New Testament to be the original sinner. The reason for this is that Adam was the head of the human race, and, therefore, responsible for its actions. He attempts (at first) to hide his nakedness before God. He attempts (at last) to hide himself from God. 1 October 2011 13 Creation OrdersKingdom of Satan : Kingdom of Satan Satan is depicted as the prince of this world, having power over demons and over godless people. He is, however, subject to God’s sovereignty and therefore his power is limited and his rule temporary. Satan’s power He has power in the world - 1 John 5:19 He claims power over this world - Mt 4:8-9 6 He is called the “prince” or the “god” of this world - John 12:31 "the prince of the power of the air" - Eph. 2:2; These titles indicate the temporary nature of Satan’s rule: - John 14:30; 16:11 He is responsible for some illnesses - Luke 13:16 He is responsible for death - Heb 2:14 Satan’s kingdom He has a kingdom - Mt 12:26 He has a throne - Rev 2:13 He is the prince of demons - Mt 9:34. Satan’s authority is limited He cannot do more than God allows - Job 1:12 3 His rule is temporary - Rom 16:20; Rev 20:10 1 October 2011 Creation Orders 14Condemnation - Flood of Noah — Genesis 6–9: Condemnation - Flood of Noah — Genesis 6–9 The conditions prior to the Flood. A great population explosion took place (6:1). There was an outpouring of satanic activity (6:2). All humanity had become depraved. As a result of all this, “it repented the Lord that he had made man on earth, and it grieved him at his heart” (6:6). The Flood would occur 120 years from this point (6:3). The salvation through the Flood. God informs Noah to construct a 450 x 75 x 45-foot floating barge. Noah was to cover both the outside and inside of the ark with pitch. Noah gathered a male and female of all earth’s animals and, along with his wife, three sons, and their wives, at the command of God, boarded the ark. The flood passes and the ark rests upon the mountains of Ararat. Noah is told by God to “be fruitful and multiply upon the earth” (8:17; 9:1). God now establishes a rainbow covenant with Noah. The tragedy following the Flood (9:20-29). Noah becomes drunken from his own vineyard and exposes himself within his tent. His son Ham and grandson Canaan view this nakedness. Canaan especially, incurs the wrath of his grandfather for the part he played in this. Noah predicts the future physical and spiritual life style of his three sons and their descendants. Noah dies at the age of 950. 1 October 2011 15 Creation OrdersNoah - Chronological Summary: Noah - Chronological Summary I. His spirituality A. Noah was born some 600 years before the great flood (7:11). B. At birth he was named Noah by his father, who said: “This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the Lord hath cursed” (Gen. 5:29). C. He was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, walking with God (Gen. 6:9). II. His ship A. The order—God warned him 120 years in advance of a coming universal flood and ordered him to construct a ship (Gen. 6:3, 13-16). 1. It was to be a floating rectangular box, made of cypress wood. 2. It was to be 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high. B. The occupants 1. From the human community—Noah was to enter the ark, along with his wife, their three sons and their three wives (Gen. 6:18). 2. From the animal community a. A male and female representing each species of unclean animal, bird, and reptile (Gen. 6:20) b. Seven males and seven females, representing each species of clean animal and bird (Gen. 7:2-3) 1 October 2011 16 Creation OrdersSlide 17: III. His safety — For the next year Noah would remain in the ark, protected from the terrible water judgment outside (Gen. 7:11; 8:13-14). IV. His sacrifice A. After the ark had settled on Mt. Ararat, Noah sent out a raven and a dove to determine the level of the water (Gen. 8:6-12). B. He was commanded to leave the ark (Gen. 8:15-19). C. He built an altar outside and offered up a clean animal for a burnt sacrifice (Gen. 8:20). D. He and his sons were commanded by God to be fruitful and increase in number ( V. His sign —God designated the rainbow as a sign to Noah, indicating two things (Gen. 8:21): A. As long as the earth remained, there would be springtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, day and night. B. The earth would never again be destroyed through a great flood. VI. His shame A. The failure 1. Noah planted a vineyard and became drunk from its wine (Gen. 9:20-21). 2. Ham (and his son Canaan) saw Noah’s nakedness (Gen. 9:22). 3. Shem and Japheth quickly covered their father’s nakedness (Gen. 9:23). B. The foretelling 1. Upon sobering up, Noah pronounced judgment upon Canaan for some undisclosed reason 2. Noah then issued a threefold prediction. a. That the descendants of Canaan would serve the descendants of Shem and Japheth b. That the line of Shem would become the blessed of the Lord (Gen. 9:26) c. That God would extend the territory of Japheth and his descendants (Gen. 9:27) 3. Noah lived 350 years after the flood and died at age 950 (Gen. 9:28-29). 1 October 2011 17 Creation OrdersConfusion - Tower of Babel — Genesis 10–11: Confusion - Tower of Babel — Genesis 10–11 The arrogance of man. A rebel named Nimrod (grandson of Ham) instigates a religious building program (consisting of both an astrological tower and a city) on the plains of Shinar near Babylon (11:1-4). The judgment of God. God punishes this evil attempt and separates mankind into small ethnic groups by confusing their once universal language into many dialects (11:5-9). The origin of nations. The ancient world is now settled by the descendants of Noah’s three sons. The descendants of Japheth (10:2-5). The descendants of Ham (10:6-20). The descendants of Shem (10:21-32; 11:10-32). Through Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: the nation Israel. Through Abraham, Ishmael, and Esau: the Middle East Arab countries. 1 October 2011 18 Creation OrdersSlide 19: “Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves will he be to his brothers.” He also said, “Blessed be the LORD , the God of Shem! May Canaan be the slave of Shem. May God extend the territory of Japheth; may Japheth live in the tents of Shem, and may Canaan be his slave.” Genesis 9:24-27 Abraham was descendant of Shem 1 October 2011 19 Creation OrdersMan’s responsibility in Creation Order: Man’s responsibility in Creation Order At the beginning: Adam was asked to name all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. No suitable helper was found Adam, so God made a woman. Finally the family started at the garden. At the end: Noah was asked to make the Ark and preached for about 120 years before the flood came. Always God calls His people to involve with him in his work, Creation and Redemption work. Genesis 2:18-24 & Genesis 6-9 Creation was not over until man (Adam) did his job! Creation was not destroyed until man (Noah) did his job! 1 October 2011 20 Creation OrdersWhen will this “end”?: When will this “end”? The Bible describes two births: “Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives new life from heaven” (John 3:6). • To have only one birth means to die twice: The unbeliever will suffer both physical and spiritual death (Heb. 9:27). • To have two births (John 3:3) means to die but once: The believer will never die spiritually (John 3:16). It was 1,656 years from Adam to the Flood; 427 years from the Flood to Abraham. Adam's life overlapped Methuselah's by 243 years. There were 126 years between the death of Adam and the birth of Noah. Noah lived 350 years after the Flood; he died two years before birth of Abraham. Shem lived from 98 years before the Flood until 502 years after the Flood. Shem lived until 75 years after Abraham entered Canaan. Noah lived to see the 9th generation of his own descendants. In a period of such longevity, the population increased very rapidly, although the ages became gradually shorter after the Flood Jesus will destroy every thing and handover the Kingdom to The Father - 1 Corinthians 15:24 “Delivered up” 1 October 2011 21 Creation Orders Two birthsSources used:: Sources used: Halley's Bible Handbook by Halley's Bible Handbook, Inc. 2000 THE HOLY BIBLE: New International Version International Bible Society. 1984, Willmington’s Bible Handbook , by Harold L.
