Slide 4:

MBARI collects, preserves, identifies, documents and exhibits work pertaining to the art, craft, and culture of Africa under the empathetic direction of founder and Director Mimi Wolford. Mimi Wolford with Kine Aw Images Photograph Courtesy of Bruce McNeil

Slide 5:

Mimi and the Institute are a gateway for African artists to the US art market. They have arranged over 100 exhibitions. Memorable exhibits include Out of Bounds: Women Artists from Africa and Colors of Africa: Contemporary Art from the Continent

Slide 6:

Paraphrasing, Kine Aw says “My work reflects the relationship of depth and form in people’s visual expressions, especially those of African woman, in which harmony follows the linear…. I travel down the road between figurative and abstract. I…base my works …on the essential – that of the look, movement and expression – not so much on the human, but an ordered disorganization.” The African Woman is her subject because she is …”curvy, round and large – ‘linear lines’.”

Slide 7:

Kine Aw’s images, mainly facial, are for me esthetically appealing. They are figurative, highly abstract, highly textured, impressionistic and whimsical in some aspects. They depict an array of African female beauty, female emotions and female experiences. Her images express implicit narratives that are culturally specific and also universal.

Slide 8:

Kine Aw is joyful and figuratively dances on her canvases with different means of expression – pencil, hands, breath (blowing), color, monochromatic composition, bicolor. A symbiosis between acrylic and oil.

Slide 9:
