Hi, I would like to use this for my science class. It is a perfect match for what I need.

Michigan’s Invasive Species :

Michigan’s Invasive Species

First of All, Why Care? :

First of All, Why Care? Invasive Species cost our country over $100 billion dollars each year! Invasive Species impact half of the species on our endangered species list! They are a threat to many of our native plants and animals. They are a pain to deal with.

Purple Loosestrife :

Purple Loosestrife A common and good looking flower. Produces up to 2.7 million seeds per plant per year! No Natural Predators Chokes out other plants and wetlands.

Eurasian Watermilfoil :

Eurasian Watermilfoil It was once sold commonly as a aquarium plant. Forms very dense mats of vegetation on the surface of water. These mats interfere with swimming, fishing, water sports, and boating. Each plant fragment turns into a new plant.

More… :

More… Water Quality is diminished because wind can’t mix the oxygen into the water. A perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Asian Carp :

Asian Carp Grow up to 4 feet and weigh up to 100 pounds. They eat from the bottom of the food web in massive amounts. This leaves little food for other native fish that need that same food to live.

More… :

More… They will become a large part of the great lakes ecosystem if they get it. No Natural Predator. Motors upset them into jumping rather high. In many areas, people refuse to boat or ski by them.

Bill Dance Video :

Sea Lamprey :

Sea Lamprey A predacious eel like fish native to the Atlantic Ocean. Adult sea lampreys feed by attaching on other fish with their suctorial mouths and extracting blood and other body fluids from the fish.

More… :

More… They really took after the Lake Trout population. The decline in Lake Trout had a major impact on the Lake Michigan food web. Video

Zebra Mussel :

Zebra Mussel Zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) are small, fingernail-sized mussels native to the Caspian Sea region of Asia Zebra Mussels Attach and can ruin anything that stays in water (pipes, docks, engines, etc…)

More… :

More… Zebra Mussels eat a lot of plankton…the base of aquatic food webs.

Round Goby :

Round Goby The goby is a bottom-dwelling fish that has great potential for causing impacts on Great Lakes fisheries. Round goby are thriving in the Great Lakes Basin because they are aggressive, voracious feeders which can forage in total darkness.

More… :

More… The round goby takes over prime spawning sites traditionally used by native species, competing with native fish for habitat and changing the balance of the ecosystem. Goby can also survive in degraded water conditions, and spawn more often and over a longer period than native fish.

Introducing the Next Slide :

Introducing the Next Slide This past week you did a study on the relationship between the Round Goby and the Lake Erie Water Snake. The following movie covers these animals.

Some More Examples… :

Some More Examples… Emerald Ash Borer European Gypsy Moth Eurasian Ruffe And Much Much More…
