Introduction :

Agricultural irrigation is highly important in crop production everywhere in the world. Tanzania's economy is dominated by agricultural production, which accounts more than 50% of GDP. Recently irrigation in Tanzania took place on traditional irrigation schemes, some of which are many hundreds of years old. Irrigation systems should be an appropriate agent to offer solutions to the increasing demand of food, and to the improvement, sustainability and efficiency of the agricultural sector. Introduction

Research problem:

Most of the agriculture activities are done in rural areas where there are few mobile users as well as mobile operators. Quality of service has become an issue in most GSM system in our country, this creates some difficulties on the implementation of GSM teleautomated irrigation system. The need to have optimal control at our farms at the point of failure caused by GSM system (infrastructure) is necessary because the existing tele -automated drip irrigation system cant work in our environment. Research problem

Objectives :

To develop an optimal control system that can remotely send data and controls to the farm through the mobile networks and give full control when the mobile network fails. Specific objectives To design a device which will monitor availability of mobile network at the farm. To create a mechanism of directing commands to the backup control when there’s no mobile network To Create a mechanism on how the microcontroller can respond to two signals (from the mobile phone and from the backup control). To Create an interface and a switching mechanism between the network scanner, BSU and backup control To Test the system Objectives

Literature review:

Many research have been done in the agriculture field, most of them are concentrating on sensors parameters and automatic switching mechanisms of pumps based on sensor’s signals. The literature review shows that, automatic irrigation systems have been applied through wireless technology at the farm area and through the intervention of a mobile phone through the mobile network. The technology is one of the factors which limits the implementation of some of the tele automated irrigation system in developing countries. Literature review

Methodology :

To monitor network availability, the Creation of an antenna which is sensitive to radio frequencies of the base station antenna combined with an analog to digital converter with two outputs zero and one must be done. Programming the base station unit to switch to the stand by control when a response of zero is obtained from analog to digital converter of the antenna system. Programming the base station unit to be on a standby mode ready to make a voice call to the user through the mobile network when a response of one is produced from the analog to digital converter of the antenna system. Programming the microcontroller to be able to accept signal from the mobile phone and a signal from the standby control using assembly language. Designing a two state switch which is controlled by the analog to digital converter of the antenna system. Combining the system ready for testing Cont’d
