Believe it or not when the Jacuzzi family first immigrated to California in the early 1900’s, the seven brothers got machinists and got their big start making airplanes. They had a contract with the US government designing airplane propellers during WWI; one of these designs used was made of wood and was called “The Jacuzzi Toothpick”. The Jacuzzi Brother proceeded to revolutionize the airplane industry by designing and manufacturing the first closed cockpit passenger monoplane which was later used by the US postal service to carry mail between San Francisco and Yosemite.
After an airplane accident involving one of the brothers they company moved away from the airplane business. They took their knowledge of hydraulic airplane pumps and applied it to the agricultural industry by developing a submergible, aeration irrigation pump that greatly aided farmers with their crops.
During the time of around the 1940’s one of the brothers, Candido, his young son became ill with a form of arthritis at an early age. Candido modified one of the company’s hydraulic irrigation pumps and modified it for a bathtub to help ease his young son’s pain in between doctor visits.
Te son’s name was Kenneth and actually took his place at the head of the company later on. In 1956 the Jacuzzi Brother released the J-300, the first of portable spas, a pump that could be placed in any bath tub for a relaxing massage.

About ten years later the brothers released the first fully integrated spa dubbed the “Roman Bathtub” and by the 1970’s the spas were fully heated and filtering systems to keep the water clean.
Modern design for hot tubs start from the basis of these early designs and the earliest design patents belong to the Jacuzzi family. Around the 1970’s swim spas started to appear. These are tubs filled with water that allow the person to exercise against a current created by high powered jet or a large fan.
Modern day versions of these tubs can move hundreds of gallons per minute and offer an excellent medium for swimmer or physical trainers. The Jacuzzi Company is no longer owned by the family, it was sold off sometime during the 1970’s to a large business conglomerate and shifted owners again in 2006 to Apollo Management.
However Jason Hydrotherapy was owned and started by Remo Jacuzzi in 1982 to continue on his family’s work in quality hydrotherapy, this was after he left his position at Jacuzzi.
