We learn what group we belong in from interacting with our society (we learn about race)
Societies conception of race changes overtime (the one drop rule v. blood quantum. Include/exclude. Socially motivated definitions)

Sometimes society attaches importance to religious identity. Hitler/Jews – JFK/Catholics
