Lesson 4Part 2 :Lesson 4Part 2 Resocialization
Resocialization :Radically changing an individuals personality by carefully controlling the environment.
Total institutions – A setting where people are isolated from the rest of society and manipulated by an administrative staff. In these institutions is where resocialization takes place.
Goffman – Asylums – studied the resocialization process in mental institutions. 3 characteristics and a two step process. What are some other examples of total institutions? Resocialization
Characteristics :1. All aspects of daily life are supervised. Individuals in total institutions are supervised almost constantly throughout the day and night.
2. The environment is highly standardized. Inmates where uniforms, eat the same food, do the same activities.
3. Rules and schedules dictate when and where everything is done and most everything is done in large groups. Eating, sleeping, and other activities. Characteristics
Two Step Process :1. Break down an individuals existing identity. Usually degrading and humiliating. Before you can build the new person, you have to erase the old. Anything that made the person an individual and gave them their identity must be purged.
Personal possessions taken away (even name - serial number/rank), searches are common (no privacy allowed), hair cut and uniform (all made to look the same). Two Step Process
Two step process :2. A new self identity is built through a system of rewards and punishments. Rewarded for desired behavior (acting like the self the institution wants to create). Punished for acting any other way.
Military – promotions/awards/leave v. gigs/push-ups/demotions/brig. Need this radical change in people because they must learn to kill (radically different value than in civilian life). Two step process
Problems :Resocializing people within total institutions can be very successful, but it can also cause problems.
Individuals can become institutionalized – lose the capacity to live as an individual on the outside. The released inmate that does not know how to act/make decisions on their own. Only feel comfortable when all the decisions are made for them. Faced with making these choices on their own – the individual has trouble. Problems
Problems :Anomie – refers to a state of normlessness, or being caught between value systems.
What value system does the soldier follow when reentering civilian life?
What world does the Native American released from a boarding school belong to? Problems

Would it change you?
