The 4/3/2 technique:

The 4/3/2 technique

What is the 4/3/2 technique?:

What is the 4/3/2 technique? Learners work in pairs with one acting as the speaker and the other as listener. The speaker talks for 4 minutes on a topic while the partner listens. Then, the pairs change with each speaker giving the same information to a new partner in 3 minutes, followed by a further change and a 2 minute talk. A fluency activity:- encouraged to process large quantity of language (Help learners to produce and understand message- repetition by learner & high rate of processing)-limited demands, can be controlled by teacher, -reach a high level of performance Easy activity. No new vocabulary or grammar. 4  2: number of grammatical error and hesitation decreased. Increased use of complex sentences

Why is it important to use the 4/3/2 technique?:

Why is it important to use the 4/3/2 technique? Not enough fluency activities in Malaysian classroom. Fluency-”learners should be fluent with what they already know” (Paul Nation) Activate prior knowledge-“no good knowing them but not being able to produce/recognize them” Challenging- time pressure. Push learners to talk a bit faster which results in them perform at a higher than normal level. Increase opportunity to speak in class- important for Ss Productive Encourage listening as well Inclusive
