ElkInformation Elk weigh about 600 to 700 pounds. They are also 7 to 10 feet long. The color of their hair is brown and tan. Covering their skin is hair. Elk also breathe from their lungs. When elk are born they come out alive. The cow elk also known as the female can only have one calf in late May or early June. A baby elk is called a calf.

If it is hot like in Montana in the summer, they will go up on the high mountain top. But if it is cool in a grassy meadow, they will bed there . Elk migrate which means they move from place to place in winter.

How do elk protect themselves ? Elk protect themselves by using their antlers. They use their antlers to hit the mountain lion when it jumps and tries to bite them. So when they try to bite them it gets stuck in their antlers and gets killed. Elk are not endangered. The main predator of an elk is a mountain lion. Sometimes bears will attack the calves.

Elk Elk mostly live in the west but can be found in the east. Colorado and Mexico have the largest elk in the world. The elk in Colorado are hiding in the thick brush on the mountain tops in the cold in winter.
