Select the file that you want to open. Click the arrow next to the Open button, and then click Open and Repair. To recover as much of the workbook data as possible, click Repair or to extract values and formulas from the workbook when an attempt to repair the workbook is not successful, click Extract Data.

Save the file in HTML or XML Spreadsheet format If you can open the corrupted Excel file, you can filter it if you save it in HTML format or in XML Spreadsheet format. To do this, follow these steps: On the File menu, click Save as Web Page. For XML Spreadsheet, click Save As XML Spreadsheet. Then click Save. Close the file and again open the file in Excel. On the File menu, click Save As. In the Save as type list, click Microsoft Excel Workbook or click Microsoft Excel Workbook for XML Spreadsheet. Change the name of the file to create a new filtered copy without replacing the original.
