Dr. Guy Berard Founder of the Berard Method of AIT Steps to AIT Berard Method : Steps to AIT Berard Method Slide 3: Families come from local towns, other states and foreign countries to participate in the programs provided at IDEA Training Center. Step 1 Slide 4: The process usually begins with a phone conversation with Sally to discuss the individual’s needs and concerns. Step 2 Slide 6: Parents meet with Sally to discuss their child and learn more details about the program. Step 3 Slide 8: Hearing is carefully tested by IDEA Training Center’s Berard-trained audiologist to assure that there are no conditions present that will interfere with the AIT process. Step 4 Slide 9: Sally personally operates the training equipment (Berard-approved Earducator 6/F™), setting each individual’s program according to their specific needs. Step 5 Slide 11: The TimeTimer™ (a visual clock) is set to show the children how long they will be listening. Step 6 Slide 12: Headphones are adjusted and the child is introduced to the AIT music in a private listening room, designed to be relaxing and comfortable. Step 7 Slide 13: Listening sessions are 30 minutes, twice a day, for a total of 10 days, most often completed over 10 consecutive days, however, sometimes a weekend break may be scheduled. Step 8 Slide 15: Children usually enjoy the beanbag chairs. Some may feel more secure with a favorite security object, but playing with toys and reading is not recommended. Step 9 Slide 16: Parents typically remain in the listening room with their child. This provides reassurance and helps the child to relax and enjoy the music. Step 10 Slide 17: Sometimes, older individuals prefer to listen while the parents wait in the waiting room. Step 11 Slide 18: Parents enjoy the opportunity to learn from the Resource Library that contains a variety of books, videotapes and audiotapes. Step 12 Slide 19: Children enjoy time to relax and play in the waiting room before or after their listening sessions. Step 13 Slide 20: Parents receive counseling in Aftercare to help assure that the AIT benefits will be maintained over the coming years. Information about other interventions and therapies that may also benefit their children is provided through discussion and a Parent Resource Notebook. Step 14 Slide 22: A Keystone Telebinocular Vision Skills screening is included in the AIT program for those children who can participate in this process. The screening identifies children who may have difficulties with functional visual skills necessary for success in school and sports. Step 15 Slide 24: Sally is also a Certified Irlen Screener, and provides Irlen screenings to aid in the identification of Irlen Syndrome, a visual perceptual problem which affects many individuals with developmental disabilities and learning-related disorders. Step 16 Slide 25: Sally prepares a final report based on the information gathered for the 6 month period. The data collected documents a variety of improvements following the AIT program. Step 17 Slide 26: Increased speech, language and auditory processing skills typically lead to improvements in self-confidence, socialization and learning. As sensory processing difficulties diminish, improvements are seen in attention and concentration, and behavioral issues typically decrease.
