Moods are not only experienced by adults, children experience them too. Moods are emotions of how we are feeling and they show on our faces or in our actions. Children need to understand that different moods at different times are a normal thing and we all handle our own moods in different ways. Teaching about moods. : Teaching about moods. “Many Colored Days” by Dr. Seuss./colored streamers Model using “I” messages classical music listening examples “The Changing Colors of Amos” by John Kinyon/drawl how the music makes you feel Science – bubbles and their color in the light Songs – “If Your Happy and You Know It” BLUE : BLUE Blue represents peace, tranquility, calm, stability, harmony, unity, trust, truth, confidence, conservatism, security, cleanliness, order, loyalty, sky, water, cold, technology, and depression. Blue can "slow the pulse rate, lower body temperature, and reduce appetite." Blue is considered a business color because it reflects reliability. BLACK : BLACK Black is the absence of light and therefore, of color. It represents power, sexuality, sophistication, formality, elegance, wealth, mystery, fear, evil, anonymity, unhappiness, depth, style, evil, sadness, remorse, anger, underground, good technical color, mourning and death. GREEN : GREEN Green, one of most-often cited favorite colors. It represents nature, environment, health, good luck, renewal, youth, vigor, spring, generosity, fertility, jealousy, inexperience, envy, misfortune. "Its cool quality soothes, calms, and has great healing powers." It is often worn in operating rooms by surgeons. ORANGE : ORANGE Orange is a combination of yellow and red. Orange is considered a warm color like red, but to a lesser extent; orange expresses energy. It has luminous qualities and has been used for attention-getting purposes, such as on caution signs. Orange brings up memories of fall leaves, pumpkins and Halloween. It symbolizes balance, warmth, enthusiasm, vibrance, flamboyancy, and is demanding of attention. PURPLE : PURPLE Purple represents royalty, spirituality, nobility, ceremony, mystery, transformation, wisdom, enlightenment, cruelty, arrogance, mourning. Purple is considered an exotic color. RED : RED Red is the color that we pay the most attention to. It is the warmest and most energic color in the spectrum. We associate red with love, valentines, danger, desire, speed, strength, violence, anger, emergency exit signs, stop signs and blood. Red can evoke a fight-or-flight response, raise blood pressure and make the heart beat faster. WHITE : WHITE White is what we see when all colors come together in perfect balance. It represents reverence, purity, simplicity, cleanliness, peace, humility, precision, innocence, youth, birth, winter, snow, good, sterility, and marriage YELLOW : YELLOW Yellow represents joy, happiness, optimism, idealism, imagination, hope, sunshine, summer, gold, philosophy, dishonesty, cowardice, betrayal, jealousy, covetousness, deceit, illness, hazard, spirituality and inspiration. Case Study – Why pay attention to our children’s moods? : Case Study – Why pay attention to our children’s moods? In a small town of 1,300 people. A little girl starts kindergarten. Watching her play she seemed like a happy child. She got along well with others and invited outside children to join in on the play. During classroom time this child was shy and reserved. She did not want to answer or be talked with by the teacher. These were the same actions up into high school. In high school she walked down the hallway with her head down, not talking to anyone passing. She came from a small town and knew everyone in the school. As a teacher, have you asked yourselves why? Senior year – note- 12 years later. This shy child started to hold her head up and talk to others passing in the hall. As a teacher would you have wondered what happened? Her side of the story. : Her side of the story. 1st grade – Teacher gets her to open up and talk about what has happened. The teacher ask the counselor to step in. The counselor ask parents to step in. Senior year – A new teacher from outside the small town gets her to open up and talk about what has happened. Since she had been a child of 5 years old she has been sexually molested by a grocery store owner. In first grade after telling the teacher her step father started molesting her, a teacher, and an uncle. What changed her senior year – a new teacher cared enough to not just push the information up under a rug and pretend she did not hear. Pay attention to your students moods and actions. Give them the tools to be able to communicate their feelings. : Pay attention to your students moods and actions. Give them the tools to be able to communicate their feelings.
