Ở Tokyo vào thời Minh Trị Thiên Hoàng, có hai vị thầy với tính cách hoàn toàn khác nhau. Unsho là vị thầy Chân Ngôn Tông, giữ mọi lề luật của nhà Phật rất kỹ lưỡng. Ông không bao giờ uống rượu, và không bao giờ ăn gì sau 11 giờ sáng. In Tokyo in the Meiji era there lived two prominent teachers of opposite characteristics. One, Unsho, an instructor in Shingon, kept Buddha’s precepts scrupulously. He never drank intoxicants, nor did he eat after eleven o’clock in the morning.

Phật tử không được cho ngay cả một giọt rượu chạm lưỡi mình. The other teacher, Tanzan, a professor of philosophy at the Imperial University, never observed the precepts. When he felt like eating, he ate, and when he felt like sleeping in the daytime, he slept. One day Unsho visited Tanzan, who was drinking wine at the time, not even a drop of which is supposed to touch the tongue of a Buddhist.

“Ê, anh ơi, uống một ly nhé.” “Tôi không bao giờ uống rượu!” Unsho nhấn mạnh nghiêm trọng. “Người không uống thì không phải là người,” Tanzan nói. “Hello, brother,” Tanzan greeted him. “Won’t you have a drink?” “I never drink!” exclaimed Unsho solemnly. “One who does not drink is not even human,” said Tanzan.

“Anh nói tôi không là người chỉ vì tôi không mê uống rượu!” Unsho nói giận dữ. “Nếu tôi không là người thì tôi là gì?” “Do you mean to call me inhuman just because I do not indulge in intoxicating liquids!” exclaimed Unsho in anger. “Then if I am not human, what am I?”

B ì nh * Giới hạnh cần thiết, như là nền tảng, cho người tu học mà tâm còn nhiều chấp trước. Giới hạnh không cần thiết cho người mà tâm đã thoát vòng chấp trước. * Người tâm còn nhiều chấp trước thấy ai không giữ giới đều sai. Người tâm không còn chấp trước, như Bồ tát Thường Bất Khinh--tiền thân của Phật Thích Ca, có thái độ với tất cả mọi người: “ Tôi chẳng dám khinh quí Ngài, quí Ngài đều sẽ thành Phật.” (Trần Đình Hoành dịch và bình) Annotation * Precepts are necessary, as the basis,  for the practitioner whose heart still has much attachment. Precepts are unnecessary for the practitioner whose heart is free from attachment. * Practitioner with much attachment sees any precept-breaker as wrongdoer. Practitioner without attachment, similar to Never-Slighting Bodhisattva--Siddhārtha Gautama Buddha in a previous life--has this attitude toward everyone : “I’d never look down on you.  You all will become Buddha”.
