S.A.S.E.
Summary :Summary A good summary answers the question: “What was the reading/movie/lecture about?”
A good summary simply describes what the reading presented.
For example: The Wizard of Oz is about a farm girl named Dorothy who is attempting to return to her home in Kansas after being snatched up by a tornado and deposited in a fantasy land populated by witches, a talking scarecrow, a cowardly lion, a tin man, and other mysterious beings.
Analysis :Analysis Analysis breaks down the whole work into parts in order to examine the parts carefully.
For example: we can analyze an engine by looking at its parts.
Another example: we can analyze a movie by examining the characters, themes, setting, dialogue etc…
Analysis can examine cause, process, categories, comparisons, opinions about etc…
Synthesis :Synthesis Synthesis looks outside of the subject itself and draws comparisons with other material.
We analyze a type of food by examining its ingredients. We Synthesize by showing similarities & differences with other foods.
For example: Chinese food vs. Thai food – how are they similar? Different?
Synthesis cont’d :Synthesis cont’d Another example: We synthesize when we compare Star Wars to Star Trek.
And yet another example: We synthesize when we read a movie critic’s review of Star Wars and compare his/her review with our own opinion about the movie.
Evaluation :Evaluation Evaluation is more than “I liked it.”
Critical Evaluation is based upon the previous steps – analysis and synthesis.
Evaluation is informed and educated about the topic.
Evaluation considers all sides before making a determination of value.
