Breastfeeding with Implants:

Breastfeeding with Implants You Can Breastfeed

Introduction:

Many women wonder if they can breastfeed after getting implants. Women who got implants may not have pondered whether they would want to breastfeed later on in life before considering the surgery. Introduction

Issues with Breastfeeding:

Having breast implants have caused some issues with breastfeeding well. Several issues can affect the ability to breastfeed successfully and these are based upon each individual. You may have a better chance of breastfeeding successfully if it has been some time since your implant surgery. The reasoning for this is because your body has had more time to heal and the milk ducts can allow for more lactation. Issues with Breastfeeding

Milk Ducts and Nerve Endings:

The main issue that can hinder successful breastfeeding is based upon the way your breast implants were inserted. There are several common methods that can be used to implants that include incisions around the nipple are inserts under the breast or across the arm. Breastfeeding requires the milk ducts and nerve endings to be fully intact. Many of the nerves that supply milk to the nipple and breast are surrounded under the arm. Problems with the nipples can affect the breast milk supply which can also have an affect on stimulation around the nipple. If the milk ducts were damaged during surgery, then there may be an issue with the flow of milk to the nipple. The best area for breast implant insertion as to not cause any damage is under the breast. Milk Ducts and Nerve Endings

Techniques:

If your incision is around your nipple or areola, this does not mean that your breast are too damaged to breast feed. It really just depends on the technique that was used. If your whole nipple was removed in order to insert your implants, then this may have caused irreversible damage to your nerves and milk ducts. Techniques

Supplemental Feedings:

If there are issues with the flow of milk after breast surgery, then a new mother can consider supplemental feedings with formula so that a new baby can get the benefits of breastfeeding as well. If you have questions about the process, then you can always discuss issues with a lactation consultant or hospital nurse to talk about different methods available to support effective breastfeeding. New moms can gain the support that they need to develop a plan to ensure that the baby is getting feed well and getting the nutrients needed. Supplemental Feedings
