Case Studies For Paper 1 Settlement – paper 1 Nairobi and Reading Know site, factors affecting growth, location of and characteristics of different parts of these cities The Economic World 1 The Farming System Phillipines Case study of Intensive Wet Rice Farming in an LEDC b) Organic Farming Human and physical factors Factors affecting farming systems in the EU Home farm UK The importance of not just physical and human but also political factors Factors affecting the Location of Industry High Tech industry in Bracknell Brazil – Fiat in Minas Gerais The Natural World Papua New Guinea rainforest Conflict, exploitation and sustainable development of a fragile environment.

Slide 3:

Case Studies For Paper 2 Managing the Environment Coastal Management Holderness coastline Managing Tourism Mountains Machu Pichu: LEDC, tourism causing problems Malham: MEDC, Sustainable tourism Coasts Ayia Napa MEDC, non-sustainable Maldives LEDC, sustainable Fragile Environments need management Farming & fragile enviroments Sahel – causes desertification, human and physical Eden Foundation - responses Managing the Environment Managing Flooding Boscastle - Mississippi - 1993 Fragile Environments and Resource Exploitation Cota Donana – Effect of mining on a nature reserve

Slide 4:

Heavy rainfall meant that soils were saturated (North Dakota , kansas and Iowa received double typical rain Jan-June 93) Also so heavy that they could not be held in streams. Parts of S. Iowa had 160mm of rain fall on 4th and 5th July which is over 150 percent of average July total. 80% of the original wetlands along the river had been drained since 1940. They normally act as natural storage reservoirs for floodwaters. 60,000 houses were destroyed or damaged causing $10 billion of damage Channel Changes – 1750km of the river has been straightened and lined with concrete to allow the water to flow faster through areas Dams – 105 dams have been built on the Missouri to hold back floodwater Heavy urbanisation of the Mississippi flood plain means that there is reduced infiltration and rain flows faster to the river. Levees have been built along 3000 km of the river, some up to 15 m high 32 people died 30,000 people were evacuated Warm moist air from Gulf of Mexico met cold dry air from Canda. The warm air was forced to rise and condense leading to the high rainfall. Task: Annotate your own map to show causes of the flood – physical and human and the effects. Use a key with three different colours 4 million hectares of farmland flooded causing a 10% drop in farm production Barge traffic disrupted north of St Louis for 2 months causing loss of $1 million per day Des Moines lost water supply for 19 days Overflow channels – these divert floodwater e.g. the Bonne Carre floodway takes water around New Orleans Afforesation of the tenessee valley slows down run off and intercepts more water. Re-establishing wetlands from agriculture – this allows a natural area for floodwaters to be soaked up.
