Slide 9:

9 Searching the Catalogue Search Options basic search title search author search subject search advanced search Search Modes keywords browse phrase exact

Slide 10:

10 The Library Catalogue Keyword searching Advantages: searches the entire catalogue data for the key words →results no matter where key words are located in the catalogue data Disadvantages: spelling error single/plural spelling phrase not in the catalogue record variant spelling

Slide 11:

11 Search Strategies – Boolean Operators AND – narrows a search → less results when you use two or more words together, AND is assumed so you are automatically using the AND Boolean operator OR – broadens a search → increases results NOT – excludes information that you do not want included in the search results  be careful when using the Boolean operator NOT

Slide 12:

12 “AND” is used to retrieve documents that include all of the search terms. Documents retrieved must have all terms. “AND” narrows the search and as a result, it limits the number of documents that can be retrieved. A greater number of terms connected with “AND” will result in a more precise search and will generate fewer results. AND - the coloured area indicates those items containing all the search terms family relationship AND educational achievement AND elementary school Boolean Operators ‘AND’

Slide 13:

13 “OR” is used to retrieve documents that include one or several of the search terms or all of the terms. Documents retrieved can contain one term only, two out of three, or all terms. “OR” can be used to connect synonyms or related terms describing a concept. “OR” broadens the search and increases the number of documents that can be retrieved. A greater number of terms connected with “OR” will generate a greater number of results. family relationship OR family OR family environment family relationship OR family OR family environment Boolean Operators ‘OR’

Slide 14:

14 “NOT” is used to retrieve documents that include one or more search terms while excluding from the search results documents that include a specific search term. For example, NOT is used here to exclude all documents that include the term “elementary school”. “NOT” enables one to exclude one or more search terms. (family relationship AND educational achievement) NOT elementary school (family relationship AND educational achievement) NOT elementary school Boolean Operators ‘NOT’
