Definition: Seminar Term #6 :Definition: Seminar Term #6 Scientific medicine – also known as ‘evidenced-based medicine’ which states that in order to assess the benefits of applying healing practices there must be a standard by which to assess the efficacy of those practices. If the practices applied result in consistent, positive outcomes over time, those become ‘practice standards.’ Scientific medicine uses empirical or scientific studies, data, and information in the application of treatment for disease. 21

Seminar Question 1: Response :Seminar Question 1: Response Italian Professor of Anatomy-Battista Mogagni (1682-1771) developed the anatomical concept of disease based upon his thorough note taking of patients symptoms. His study indicated that diseases can be traced to particular pathology or disturbance in individual organs. 26

Seminar Question 2: Response :Seminar Question 2: Response Louis Pasteur, a French chemist developed the germ theory that became generally accepted in 1881.
The significance of germ theory is that it disproved the idea that bacteria generated spontaneously. This allowed researchers eventually to focus on specific diseases-identifying the organism that causes said disease. 28

Seminar Question #3:Response :Seminar Question #3:Response The humoral theory of medicine was developed by Hippocrates, expanded by Galen, and used throughout the Middle Ages. It was considered medical dogma in Western civilization until just over a hundred years ago. Chinese and other Eastern cultures still use humoral concepts in their medicine today, and some modern alternative health techniques of the West are finding renewed value in these "old" ideas. 30
