OBJECTIVE The objective of my study is to show the Health Benefits of Organic foods. The study was conducted with respect to ‘FRESH EARTH’ organic store.

What is Organic Food?????? :

What is Organic Food?????? Organic food, defined by how it cannot be made rather than how it can be made. Organically grown foods are grown without the use of toxic pesticides, fertilisers and growth regulators. Organic production also prohibits the use of genetically modified organism.

Slide 4:

"Organic" does not mean "natural.“ However, the food industry uses the term "natural" to indicate that a food has been minimally processed and is preservative-free. Natural foods can include organic foods, but not all natural foods are organic.

Organic Farming-THE ORIGIN :

Organic Farming-THE ORIGIN Organic farming is the oldest form of agriculture. Before the end of World War II, farming without the use of petroleum-based chemicals (synthetic fertilizers and pesticides) was the only option for farmers. Technologies developed during the war were found to be useful for agricultural production. For example, the chemical ammonium nitrate, which was used as munitions, became useful as fertilizer

Slide 6:

These days, farmers are switching to organic agriculture once again, but now with an ecologically based, systematic approach that includes long term planning, detailed record keeping and major investment in equipment and supplies.

Harmful effects of pesticides :

Harmful effects of pesticides Even when pesticides are used correctly, they still end up in the air and affect human lives. Organophosphate pesticides have become associated with acute health problems such as abdominal pain, dizziness, headaches, nausea, vomiting, as well as skin and eye problems. In addition, there have been many other studies pesticide exposure-- severe health problems such as respiratory problems, memory disorders, dermatologic conditions, cancer, depression, neurologic deficits, miscarriages, and birth defects.

Organic vs. Conventional :

Organic vs. Conventional Organic farmers: feed soil and build soil matter with natural fertilizer to grow their crops. use insect predators, traps and barriers to protect crops from pests and disease. make use of crop rotation, mechanical tillage and hand-weeding, as well as cover crops, mulches, and other management methods to control weed growth . Conventional farmers: apply chemical fertilizers to the soil to grow their crops spray with insecticides to protect crops from pests and disease use synthetic herbicides to control weed growth

Environmental benefits :

Environmental benefits Organic agriculture also has many important Maintains ecological balance. It enhances biodiversity minimizes nutrient losses and boosts soil productivity. reduces pollution of groundwater. minimize the greenhouse effect and global warming.

Farmers :

Farmers Educate the farmers Protect them from hazardous toxic Products of certified farmers are marketed world wide. Fair trade certification

consumers :

consumers Natural diet Physical health Emotional and mental well being.

Why Eat Organic Food? :

Why Eat Organic Food? eating organic food protect our children  Eating organic protects your own personal health Organic food may be more nutritious Organic foods contain more antioxidants. Organic foods are not genetically modified. Organic foods protect farm worker health. Eating organic foods reduces potential health risks.

Why is Organic Food So Expensive? :

Why is Organic Food So Expensive? Organic products do tend to cost more than their conventional counterparts. Because- the yield is lower and involves high certification costs. Environmental enhancement and protection Rural development by generating additional farm employment and assuring a fair and sufficient income to producers

Organic Food Quality Certification :

Organic Food Quality Certification World over the concept of organic food has come about, due to demands from consumers for food without contamination. In response to consumer demands, many countries have enacted new “LAWS” to regulate organic food production, handling and processing. These laws are commonly known as “ORGANIC STANDARDS”. Organic Standards as laws have provisions for appointment of Certification Agencies.

Slide 15:

Every producer, adopting to be an organic producer, first of all registers his/her production unit – farm with any one of the Accredited Certification Agency. Producer once registered, also signs a declaration about his/her commitment to follow Organic Standards. The producer while following Organic Standards, also maintains complete records of all the activities and practices followed for production at the farm unit. The Certification Agency conducts regular, periodical and surprise AUDITS to verify the compliance with the prescribed Organic Standards.

Slide 16:

Farmer-producer found to be in-compliance with the Organic Standards is issued a CERTIFICATE. This certificate authorizes the producer to put a STAMP as a mark of compliance with the relevant laws applicable for organic production, processing and handling. A certification mark on any product is a complete guarantee for the ORGANIC QUALITY OF A PRODUCT.
