INTRODUCTION Tata Motors Limited is India’s largest automobile company, with consolidated revenues of Rs.1,23,133 crores (USD 27 billion) in 2010-11. It is the leader in commercial vehicles in each segment, and among the top three in passenger vehicles with winning products in the compact, midsize car and utility vehicle segments. BRIEF HISTORY : 

BRIEF HISTORY Established in 1945, Tata Motors' presence indeed cuts across the length and breadth of India. Over 4 million Tata vehicles ply on Indian roads, since the first rolled out in 1954. The company's manufacturing base in India is spread across Jamshedpur (Jharkhand), Pune (Maharashtra), Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh), Pantnagar (Uttarakhand) and Dharwad (Karnataka). Following a strategic alliance with Fiat in 2005, it has set up an industrial joint venture with Fiat Group Automobiles at Ranjangaon (Maharashtra) to produce both Fiat and Tata cars and Fiat powertrains. The company is establishing a new plant at Sanand (Gujarat). The company’s dealership, sales, services and spare parts network comprises over 3500 touch points; Tata Motors also distributes and markets Fiat branded cars in India.

Acquisitions : 

Acquisitions In 2004 Tata Motors acquired Daewoo's truck manufacturing unit, now known as Tata Daewoo Commercial Vehicle, in South Korea. In 2005, Tata Motors acquired 21% of Aragonese Hispano Carrocera giving it controlling rights of the company. In 2007, Formed a joint venture with Marcopolo of Brazil and introduced low-floor buses in the Indian Market. In 2008, Tata Motors acquired British Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), which includes the Daimler and Lanchester brand names. In 2010, Tata Motors acquired 80% stake in Italy-based design and engineering company Trilix for a consideration of €1.85 million. The acquisition is in line with the company’s objective to enhance its styling/design capabilities to global standards.

Joint ventures : 

Joint ventures Tata Motors has formed a 51:49 joint venture in bus body building with Marcopolo of Brazil. This joint venture is to manufacture and assemble fully built buses and coaches targeted at developing mass rapid transportation systems. The joint venture will absorb technology and expertise in chassis and aggregates from Tata Motors, and Marcopolo will provide know-how in processes and systems for bodybuilding and bus body design. Tata and Marcopolo have launched a low-floor city bus which is widely used by Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Mumbai, Lucknow, Pune, Kochin, Trivandrum and Bengaluru transport corporations. Its manufacturing facility is based in Dharwad. Tata Motors also formed a joint venture with Fiat and gained access to Fiat’s diesel engine technology. Tata Motors sells Fiat cars in India through a 50/50 joint venture Fiat Automobiles India Limited, and is looking to extend its relationship with Fiat and Iveco to other segments. Tata has also formed several JV's with many small companies in various countries around the world.

SALES and GROWTH Tata Motors group global sales grow 24.2 per cent and cross the 1-million mark in FY2010-11 Net revenue grows 33.1 per cent to Rs123,133 croreProfit before tax grows 196.3 per cent to Rs10,437 crore The Tata Motors group's global wholesale volumes for FY2010-11, including Jaguar Land Rover, stood at 1,080,994 units, representing a growth of 24.2 per cent as compared to the previous year. Global sales of all commercial vehicles were at 512,731 units, while global sales of all passenger vehicles were at 568,263 units. The Tata Motors group, today, reported consolidated revenues (net of excise) for the year ended March 31, 2011, of Rs123,133 crore, posting a growth of 33.1 per cent over Rs92,519 crore in the previous year, with strong volume growth globally in all major markets. The consolidated profit before tax (PBT) for the year was Rs10,437 crore, compared to a PBT of Rs3,523 crore for the previous year. The consolidated profit for the period (after tax and post minority interest and profit in respect of associate companies) for the year was Rs9,274 crore, a significant increase from a profit of Rs2,571 crore in the previous year.

SALES and GROWTH Tata Motors stand-alone results for the year ended March 31, 2011 [[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[Tata Motors' sales (including exports) of commercial and passenger vehicles for FY2010-11 stood at 836,629 units, representing a growth of 25.2 per cent as compared to the previous year. In the domestic market, the company's commercial vehicles sales increased by 22.7 per cent year-on-year to 458,828 units. The company's market share in commercial vehicles was 61.8 per cent. Passenger vehicles, including Fiat and Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles distributed in India, grew by 23 per cent year-on-year in the domestic market to 319,712 units. Sales of the Tata Nano crossed the 100,000 mark during FY2010-11 and the company's passenger vehicles sales crossed 2,000,000 since inception. The market share in passenger vehicles stood at 13 per cent in FY2010-11. Tata Motors' gross revenue for the year ended March 31, 2011, was Rs52,136 crore, posting a growth of 35.9 per cent over Rs38,364 crore in the previous year. Revenues (net of excise) of Rs48,040 crore, represented a growth of 35 per cent over Rs35,593 crore in the previous year. Cost pressure, including commodity price increase, resulted in a reduction in the operating margins to 9.9 per cent, and an operating profit (EBITDA) of Rs4,771 crore in the year, posting a growth of 14.2 per cent over Rs4,178 crore in the previous year. The PBT for the year is Rs2,197 crore as compared to Rs2,830 crore in the previous year. (Year ended March 31, 2010, included other income and exceptional item of Rs958 crore (net) arising mainly on account of divestments). The PAT for the year is Rs1,812 crore as compared to Rs2,240 crore in the previous year.

Tata Motors technology and design subsidiaries Tata has dozens of technology and design subsidiaries. These include the main ones. Telco Construction Equipment (TELCON) TELCON is a joint venture between Tata Motors and Hitachi, which focuses on excavators and other construction equipment. and research work are done. HV Transmission (HVTL) and HV Axles (HVAL) HVAL and HVTL are 85% subsidiary companies of Tata Motors engaged in the business of manufacture of gear boxes and axles for heavy and medium commercial vehicles, with production facilities and infrastructure based at Jamshedpur. Tata Technologies Limited (TTL) TTL provides Engineering and Design (E&D) solutions to the Automotive Industry. Tata Motors holds 86.91% of TTL’s share capital. TTL is based in Pune (Hinjawadi) and operates in the US and Europe through its wholly owned subsidiaries in Detroit and London respectively. It also has a presence in Thailand. Tata Technologies is a software service provider in the IT services and BPO space. Its global client list includes Ford, General Motors, Toyota and Honda, to name a few. It bought over the British engineering and design services company, Incat International Plc for Rs.4 billion in August 2005. Incat specializes in engineering & design services and product lifecycle management in the international automotive, aerospace and engineering markets. With this acquisition, Tata Motors will have closer proximity to its global customers and be able to provide a wider range of services.
