Phonology 1 The Sounds of English

Phonetics and Phonology – What’s the difference?:

Phonetics and Phonology – What’s the difference? Phonetics - the study of speech sounds : the phonetic alphabet contains symbols for all possible speech sounds –eg [β] - voiced bilabial fricative - detailed description : all features indicated Phonology - the description of distinctive sound units of a specific language

Some examples ….:

Some examples …. pin and spin Phonetics : [ph] and [p] Phonology : /p/ bottle - /t/ London accent - [ʔ ] Some US accents [ɾ] Allophones = phonetically distinct variants of the same phoneme

Vowels and Consonants:

Vowels and Consonants What’s the difference between a vowel and a consonant? What three factors influence vowel quality? And consonant quality?

Vowel Sounds:

Vowel Sounds Vowel sounds depend on : Jaw position – open or closed? (Also described as tongue height – high mid or low) Tongue position – front or back Lips – spread or rounded

Vowel Sounds:

Vowel Sounds So how would you describe : /i/ as in sheep /ɒ/ as in cot /u:/ as in do /i/ close, front, spread /ɒ/ open, back, rounded /u:/ close, back, rounded

Consonant Sounds:

Consonant Sounds Consonants are also described by three variables : Voiced or unvoiced (or voiceless) Place of articulation Manner of articulation

Voicing – vibration of the vocal cords:

Voicing – vibration of the vocal cords All vowels Some consonants eg /b/ /d/ /g/ Others unvoiced (voiceless) eg /p/ /t/ /k/

Place of articulation:

Place of articulation A = nasal cavity B = alveolar ridge C = hard palate D = soft palate (velum) E = lips + teeth F = tongue G = glottis H = vocal cords

Manner of articulation:

Manner of articulation Plosive - /p/ /b/ /t/ /d/ /k/ /g/ Fricative - /f/ / /θ/ /ð/ /s/ /z/ /ʃ/ /ʒ/ /h/ Affricate - /ʧ/ /ʤ/ Nasal - /m/ /n/ /ŋ/ Approximant /l/ lateral /w/ /r/ /j/ semi-vowels

Consonant Sounds:

Consonant Sounds So what would be the full voice – place – manner description of : /m/ /s/ /g/ ? /m/ : Voiced bilabial nasal /s/ : Unvoiced alveolar fricative /g/ : Voiced velar plosive
