Three questions … What do we mean by integrated skills teaching? What do we mean by webquests? What do we mean by content based learning?

John Dewey and Learning: 

John Dewey and Learning Learning is individual growth that comes about through social experience. Learning is advanced through the use of hands-on activities that are connected  to the real world. The curriculum should arise from students' interests, should be flexible and tailored to individual needs. Curriculum topics should be integrated, not isolated from each other. Learning should be enquiry-based

An integrated skills sequence : 1 Gps : Warm Up discussion on climate change causes, effects, Ss own opinions, Al Gore etc Jigsaw listening – YouTube Group A :Geir Lundestad on why AG deserved the prize Group B : Mario Lewis on why he didn’t PW : Ss discuss the ideas they heard

An integrated skills sequence : 2 GW : Ss see photos of eight Nobel Peace prize winners – brainstorm what they know about each. Net research - Each student researches information for ….

An integrated skills sequence : 4: 

An integrated skills sequence : 4 Task : Present the case for one of these NPP winners being given the Nobel Peace Prize Superwinner award and … Think of two objections to raise against the candidature of each of the others

Next Steps… : 3 Tasks : a) write a list of the ten points you consider to be most important for website design. b) consider 3 websites (specified) and decide if you think they are effective or not and why. Be ready to justify your opinion to the rest of the group. c) Compare the final site, which is the website of the London Borough of Greenwich, with the website of your own authority. Which do you prefer and why? Is there anything that each website could learn from the other? d) Choose one more website which you visit regularly. Be prepared to show the site to the group and explain why you think it is effective or not.

What about language focus? Can be inserted before / after any text based activity – based on the language in the text. Can be T-led … …or S-led, using eg a concordancer

Learning sequence : 1 Ss research and discuss what they would include in a promotional video for Sri Lanka Students view YouTube video – comprehension tasks - which of the topics you mentioned were included - what topics which you didn’t predict were included

Learning sequence : 2 Tapescript work – identification of hype golden, sun-drenched beaches awe-inspiring marvel Students read tourist promotional websites for one of : London, Edinburgh, Cardiff – identify more examples of hype – concordancer work

Learning sequence 3: 

Learning sequence 3 Ss receive gapped transcript on second YouTube video – promotional video for Newquay. Attempt to fill the gaps, then listen and compare. Whether it’s trying one of the many ……………………… water sports, experiencing the ………………………… countryside, relaxing on the seven miles of …………………… sands and …………………………… beaches, or simply enjoying the ………………………… array of facilities, it’s …………………… to see why Newquay has become the ……………………… destination for a family holiday.

Application: 

Application Ss create video, website (which may include text, video and/or podcasts) Either … promoting Milan / a town they know well Or… Interview Language Exchange partners and focus on the other person’s town
