In addition up to 4 additional marks are awarded for knowledge and insight into how or why the strengths and weaknesses aid or negate the effectiveness of the text. Part B One mark is awarded for each justification given for the weakness prioritised, up to three marks. One additional mark is awarded for each justification that is fully developed.

Paper 1 Task 5:

Paper 1 Task 5 Always give examples where these are requested Only give one example for each strength and each weakness In Part A only focus on the areas specified by the rubric Give exactly 3 strengths and 3 weaknesses – there are no marks for "extra" strengths or weaknesses Keep the learner's level in mind when assessing strengths and weaknesses Include comments in Part A on how the particular strengths and weaknesses affect the text Use a bullet point or grid layout for the strengths and weaknesses The weakness discussed in part b should be one of those you mentioned in part a In Part b only discuss the reasons for prioritising the area – not eg how you might do it. - Make sure you allow yourself enough time to complete the task

Reasons for prioritising..:

Reasons for prioritising.. Choose the weakness that you can most easily think of reasons for Consider whether … - is something the learner will need frequently - it’s easy to deal with - is liable to “come up” in the course - is liable to create communication breakdowns - might cause offense or other negative reactions - would be motivating for the learner - would be useful for other contexts /genre types
