The Scientific Method

Slide 2:

Why Use the Scientific Method?

Slide 3:

To find out the answer to a question or to solve a problem.

Slide 4:

The Steps of the Scientific Method

1. Ask a question :

1. Ask a question What is it that you want to know? What are some examples of questions we use the scientific method for?

2. Do Background Research :

2. Do Background Research Gather information about the topic: Where are some good places you can look for imformation?

3. Construct a Hypothesis :

3. Construct a Hypothesis A Hypothesis is an “educated” guess that answers your question. Educated Guess

4. Experiment: Test Your Hypothesis :

4. Experiment: Test Your Hypothesis Create a well organized and thought out experiment to test your hypothesis. Repeat the experiment more than once, so that your results are more accurate.

5. Analyze your Data :

5. Analyze your Data Gather the data from your experiment. Analyze the data in relation to your question and hypothesis.

6. Record Observations :

6. Record Observations Record what you noticed during the experiment

7. Draw Conclusion :

7. Draw Conclusion Was your hypothesis supported or rejected?

Activity #1 :

Activity #1 Get in groups of 4: In your group create a mnemonic of the seven steps of the scientific method: Question Research Hypothesis Experiment Data Observation Conclusion Once your group is done have one member of the group write it on the board.

Example: :

Example: Q- quiet R-rodents H- hide E- everywhere D- due to O- obese C- cats Quiet Rodents Hide Everywhere Due to Obese Cats

The Scientific Method Rap :

Activity #2- M&M :

Activity #2- M&M Each group of 2 will receive one bag of M&M’s. Once in your group agree on a question about your bag of M&M’s that you would like to know. Form your hypothesis Open the bag of M&M’s and count the number of M&M’s in total and each color. Fill out the data chart. What is your conclusion? Was your hypothesis supported or rejected? Why?

Data Chart :

Data Chart Question: Hypothesis: Data: Conclusion:

DON’T EAT YOUR M&M’S….YET! :

DON’T EAT YOUR M&M’S….YET! Now everybody stand up! When the ball is thrown to you: Will be asked a question about The Scientific Method After you answer throw the ball to another classmate If you answered correctly you may sit down and eat your M&M’s! If you answered wrong you have to remain standing and wait for another turn.

Slide 19:

Why use the scientific method?

Slide 20:

What is the first step? Hint: Use your mnemonic

Slide 21:

What is an example of the first step?

Slide 22:

What is the second step?

Slide 23:

What are good ways to complete the second step?

Slide 24:

What is the third step?

Slide 25:

What is the fourth step?

Slide 26:

What is a key thing to remember during the fourth step?

Slide 27:

What is the fifth step?

Slide 28:

What is the sixth step?

Slide 29:

What is the seventh step?

Slide 30:

For the remaining people standing either: Recite your mnemonic aloud Say one thing you’ve learned about the scientific method today. Was your hypothesis for the M&M activity supported or rejected? Why?

Slide 31:

You did it! You learned The Scientific Method!!!!
