Essential Time Mastery:

Essential Time Mastery

Three types of time:

2 Three types of time Physical or event time Occurring of mental and physical events Physical time doesn’t flow Measured, or Clock time Measures physical time to compare & coordinate Our “sense of time” measures clock time Personal, psychological, or inner time “Feelings of time passing,” anxiety, pressure Measures how much we resisted things Western, linear time: time’s a physical reality that is felt to flow horizontally among past, present, and future at the same unchangeable speed for all Timelessness of peak experiences

Personal time:

3 Personal time Similar to a personal space A kind of mental cycle time or frequency of awareness Affected by heat, drugs, caffeine Internal methods can shorten / lengthen it Similar to changing movie projection rate One rate makes the flow seem continuous Changing the rate can make things seem to slow down Potential for improving productivity

What causes time pressure?:

4 Typically named factors: My boss A deadline itself A plate that’s too full, or a lack of clock time Technology Likes and dislikes, attitudes Disorganization and confusion about what to do Unclear priorities Lack of effective scheduling system Seldom identified factors: Chemical imbalance Imbalance of one’s energy flow What causes time pressure?

The main cause of time stress:

5 The main cause of time stress We turn away from some feeling or emotion-- Heart energy decreases Less confidence Less enjoyment from sensation and feeling Head energy increases Excessive labeling and thinking Throat energy agitated Time flowing in the background Self in the foreground seeks special things and activities.

‘Zone’ Questions:

6 ‘Zone’ Questions The ‘zone’ is a ‘state’ of peak experience or performance When deeply in love, what’s experience of time/timelessness? In deep meditation, what’s experience of time? When doing your best work, what’s experience of time?

Feeling of time:

7 Feeling of time There is a common experience in Tai Chi . . . . Awareness of the passage of time completely stops. ( In The Zone ) Football player John Brodie : Time seems to slow way down . . . . as if I had all the time in the world . . . yet I know the defensive line is coming at me just as fast as ever. (ITZ) Tom Seaver : As Rod Gaspar’s front foot stretched out and touched home plate, in the fraction of a second before I leaped out of the dugout . . . my whole baseball life flashed in front of me . . . . (ITZ) CTM doesn’t discuss these experiences!

Slide 8:

8 Between any two moments, see if there might be additional moments. Continue for a minute.

Clock watching—A new way?:

9 Clock watching—A new way? Directly balances the throat energy center, where imbalance produces pressure and anxiety about time Balances left and right brain hemispheres In a minute, when the timer on the next slide starts, loosely focus on the moving timer hand. Breathe easily and smoothly through nose and mouth, with the tip of the tongue on the upper palate just back of the front teeth Let the breath become more and more even and continuous, without breaks or jerkiness—this helps to evoke a sense of timelessness

Slide 10:

Clock Watching and Breathing:

11 Clock Watching and Breathing Did the sense of time pressure and anxiety decrease? Did the feeling of time change? If so, how? Did every minute seem equally long? How were pressure and anxiety related to the flow of time? As a preventative, you can practice this way of breathing as often as you can remember it. After a month or so, your whole energy level and sense of balance and relaxation will probably change.
