Instrument Families : 

Instrument Families Strings Woodwinds Brass Percussion

String Family : 

String Family They have 4 strings. Strings can be plucked (pizzicato) or played with a bow. The smaller the instrument, the higher it sounds and the bigger the instrument, the lower it sounds. Pitch is changed when the player pushes the string against the fingerboard.

Woodwind Family : 

Woodwind Family The instruments can be made of metal or wood. Sound is made by blowing across a hole (flute) or by blowing into a mouthpiece that has a single or double reed. Pitch is changed by changing the length of the air column. Keys are used to open or close holes in the tubing to make the tube longer or shorter.

Brass Family : 

Brass Family Instruments are made of metal. Pitch is changed by changing the length of the air column. Valves or a slide are used to open holes in the tubing or to connect to longer tubing. Brass instruments have a bell at the end of the instrument where the sound comes out.

Percussion Family : 

Percussion Family Sounds are made by hitting the instrument. Different types of mallets and drumsticks are used to make sounds. Mallets may be hard or soft, depending on the instrument used and the type of sound desired.
