8/7/2010 5 Find Gold in Old The first research enquiry with scientific parameters was attempted by Prof. C.Dwarakanath & the data was published in the monograph entitled Gold Therapy in Tuberculosis. The 1st Ayurvedic research center started at Jamnagar to screen haematanic action of Ayuvedic formulations – Punarnavadimandoor, Navayasaloh & Kaseesabhasma.

Anti-malarial Drug : 

8/7/2010 7 Anti-malarial Drug Ayush- 64 formulated by CCRAS has been shown to mitigate clinical malaria, cause disappearance of parasites in peripheral blood on a large sample of population (4227 cases). In animal studies the drug has been shown to be very safe, free from acute and chronic toxicity. It is found to be effective in other diseases like Filariasis, and Giardiasis.

Pushkara Guggulu in the management of Ischaemic Heart Disease :

Lasunadi Guggulu in the management of chronic stable Angina :

TDS for 2 months No. of Pts. : 20 Marked improvement in Precordial pain, dyspnoea and fatigue. Statistically significant increase in mean exercise time (computerized tread mill test) Significant decrease of S.cholesterol & S.triglycerides.

Garlic & Onion : 

8/7/2010 10 Garlic & Onion Anti-coagulant, fibrinolytic and hypocholesterolemic activities are reported with 2 types of garlic and onion. They are useful in prevention of cerebral and coronary thrombosis. Garlic is more suitable for Kapha Prakriti while onion can be given in the individuals belonging to Pitta Prakriti.

Anti-asthmatic drugs : 

8/7/2010 13 Anti-asthmatic drugs Shati (Hedychium spicatum) at the dose of 10gms a day for 4 weeks in 25 pts. Of BA relieved dyspnoea, cough, restlessness completely with an increase in vital capacity of lungs (G.N.Chaturvedi et al) Pushkaramooladi churna (Pushkaramoola+Shati+Amalaki) in the dose of 9gms a day has exhibited significant anti-asthmatic effect. (Saiprasad et al ASL Oct’98)

Ayurvedic compound for TPE : 

8/7/2010 14 Ayurvedic compound for TPE Swasakuthara 50mg + Aswagandha 200mg + Haridra 200mg is administered on 12 pts. Of TPE and the effect is compared with DC(Hetrazan) Significant relief of the most of the clinical symptoms and reduction in ESR is observed The drug has no effect on the level of circulating Eosinophils (B.R.Shetty et al) Mallasindoor compound ( Mallasindoor 5gms + CHP Pippali 20gms + Sitopaladi choorna 50gms) is also found to be useful in TPE. 8/7/2010 15 Ayurvedic drugs for Psychosis Ayurvedic compound consisting of Sankhapushpi + Jatamamsi + Brahmi(BM) + Aswagandha + Vacha (decoction 50ml) per day for 6 weeks has shown notable shift of psychotic symptoms viz. excitement, disorientation, perceptual disorder, motor disturbances, disorders of thought, depression and apathy. Rasayana & Vajeekarana drugs for depressive neurosis : 

8/7/2010 16 Rasayana & Vajeekarana drugs for depressive neurosis In view of the potential anti-anxiety and anti-depressant activity of the Rasayana Vajeekarana drugs, a combined Rasayana Vajeekarana schedule has been clinically tried in a series of pts. Of depressive neurosis. The treatment consisted of a dose of Aswagandha churna at bed time and a dose of Kapikacchu churna at morning continued for 8 weeks. The treatment showed significant clinical recovery in these cases in the form of a notable reduction in the level of clinical anxiety and depression. ( R.K.Tripathy & R.H.Singh)

Anti-Diabetic Drugs : 

8/7/2010 17 Anti-Diabetic Drugs Herbal compound consisting of Meshashringi leaves + Jambu beeja 2gms each TDS for 6 weeks has shown significant hypoglycemic effect. (Jain & Shaw ASL Jul’87) Patraka (C.tamala) in the dose of 2TSF TDS for 3 months has shown good control of diabetes (50%) Pushkaramoola (I.racemosa) in the dose of 1TSF TDS for 3months has shown significant control of diabetes. Aswagandharishta for Neurosis : 

8/7/2010 18 Aswagandharishta for Neurosis Aswagandharishta 40ml per day for 1 month in a series of 30pts. Of anxiety neurosis has shown reduction in anxiety level, mal adjustment, in the mental fatigue rate and an improvement in immediate memory span. These pts. Gained in body weight and their cardio respiratory functions improved. They showed a significant reduction in the level of urinary 17- OHCS and VMA.

Amlapitta- Parinamasoola (Non-ulcer dyspepsia and peptic ulcer disease) : 

8/7/2010 19 Amlapitta- Parinamasoola (Non-ulcer dyspepsia and peptic ulcer disease) Sutasekhararas (without gold, 600mg/day) along with Aswagandha powder (6gms) exhibited symptomatic, radiological and endoscopical improvement, along with reduction in gastric acidity (FTM) in all the treated pts. In 6 weeks. Amalaki, Yashtimadhu, Satavari, Bhringaraja, Tulasi, Kadali, Vasa have shown significant action. Coconut water has been reported to possess protective action action against asprin/histamin induced gastric mucosal damage. It’s kernal reduced the gastric acidity and improved the clinical features in patients with duodenal ulcer (Singh & Tripathi, 1966)

Chronic urinary tract infections : 

8/7/2010 20 Chronic urinary tract infections Significant symptomatic improvement marked changes in the urinary alterations with the use of Chandanasava (40ml/day) in UTI. Though the urine culture did not become negative within 6 weeks of therapy pus cells, RBC and albumen disappear in all the 40 cases. A combination of Chandraprabhavati & Gokshuradiguggulu has shown significant improvement in UTI.

8/7/2010 21 . Like other Ayurvedic drugs Chandanasava might be acting not merely as an urinary antiseptic but also as a host modifying factor, thus rendering the host urinary tract resistant to infection and making the bacterial infection pathogenetically less virulent. (Goel & Singh ASL Apr’91)

Urolithiasis : 

8/7/2010 22 Urolithiasis “Once a stone former always a stone former” 71 pts. Suffering from urolithiasis were treated with solid extract of the pseudo stem of Kadali in the dose of 600mg BD for 2 weeks. A significant segment of them passed out calculi of varying size and the recurrence of stone formation was also prevented. Pashanabheda, Varuna, Kuluttha, Parnayavani and Gokshura are found to possess lithotryptic property. Guduchi is reported to be useful in prevention of stone formation.

Nephroprotective Herb : 

8/7/2010 23 Nephroprotective Herb Punarnava (B.diffusa) when given in cases of nephrotic syndrome induced notable degree of diuresis, decrease in albuminuria, rise in S.protein and fall in S.cholesterol level.

Hepatoprotective Drugs : 

8/7/2010 24 Hepatoprotective Drugs Arogyavardhini, an Ayurvedic formulation containing a number of ingredients has been shown both by animal experiments as well as controlled clinical trails to be a good hepatoprotective and hepatocorrective agent in patients of acute viral hepatitis, however this did not help in sero-conversion in patients of hepatitis –B. Phyllanthus niruri interestingly has been shown to inactivate surface B antigen in vitro. (P.S.Patki)

Katukyadi Yoga : 

8/7/2010 25 Katukyadi Yoga Katuki, Amalaki, Yashti, Kalmegha, Kakamachi, Sigru, Sarapunkha, Daruharidra and Bhringaraja 125 pts. Suffering from hepato-cellular Jaundice were administered in the form of Hima Kashaya (Cold infusion) 50ml/day for a period of 3 weeks and significant reduction in serum bilurubin, SGPT, SGOT and Alkaline phosphotase. The drug also corrected the reduced serum albumen globulin ratio.

Phalghrita on female infertility : 

8/7/2010 26 Phalghrita on female infertility Uttaravasti with Phalaghrita 3-5 ml per day for total 9 days in 3 months. The study reported ovulatory cycles in 60% of pts. and removal of tubal blockage in 50% of cases. (Otta & Tripathi ASL Oct.’02.)

AIDS vis-à-vis Ayurveda : 

8/7/2010 27 AIDS vis-à-vis Ayurveda Has man really landed on the moon? Ans: No Can Ayurvedic drugs manage the AIDS/HIV? Ans: Yes Aswagandha (W.somnifera) has been screened for it’s immunomodulatory activity. Withania has been shown to have powerful action on human B & T lymphocytes and mice thymocytes.

8/7/2010 28 . Satavari (A.racemosus) and Guduchi (T.cordifolia) have exhibited potent immunomodulatory activity. T.cordifolia has been clinically evaluated and shown to have phagocytic ane bactericidal capacity. “Aim at the lion and miss it rather than hunt a jackal and catch it” Let us not try to find out a remedy for cold but aim at evolving an effective recipe for AIDS.

But the system ignores psychoneuro immune axis in the patient leading to unsolved health puzzles. Gray areas are essentially are due to lack of knowledge regarding etiology and hence proper curative therapeutic approach is replaced by regulatory therapy. This approach is akin to “if you can’t break it bend it”
