KALAMANDALAM CELEBRATES TEACHERS' DAY :

KALAMANDALAM in Thrissur, Kerala is a public institution which imparts training in classical arts of Kerala like Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Koodiyattam, Thullal and Panchavaadyam. It was founded in 1930 by renowned poet Padmabhooshan Vallathol Narayana Menon. KALAMANDALAM students and leading artistes marked TEACHERS’ DAY by putting up a splendid performance on Rabindranath Tagore’s “SHYAMA”. This was done to mark the birthday of their Guru, Thankamani Kutty. “My compositions retained the essense of Tagore even though the choreography was mainly a mix of Bharatanatyam and Mohiniattam. Overall, one wouldn't find anything 'un-Tagore' about the rendition." , says the GURU. Dressed in traditional costumes, students of the Guru unleashed magical energy on the stage. The choreography was top notch and brought out - with a sensitive portrayal - the failed Shyama-Bajrasen romance. KALAMANDALAM CELEBRATES TEACHERS' DAY Guru Thankamani Kutty Back to INDEX

TECHNICAL FEATURE :

TECHNICAL FEATURE A small description on any one technical aspect of Classical or Folk Dance will be highlighted in this feature as a learning arena

ALARIPPU :

Alarippu, meaning flowering bud, is traditionally the FIRST dance piece that Bharatanatyam artistes perform in a repertoire. It is the blossoming of the body and the mind and is also known as ALARISU. It is an invocatory piece, symbolizing the offering of respects to God, the Guru and the audience. The alarippu is done at the beginning of the performance and is done in three tempos. Alarippu is first done in samapadam, then araimandi and then muzhu(or purna) mandi with intricate adavus ending in mukthayas. Only rhythmic syllables are uttered with the mridangam and nattuvangam. The movements of alarippu relax the dancer's body and thereby her mind, loosen and coordinate her limbs, and prepare her for the rest of the dance. Rhythm has a rare capacity to concentrate and alarippu brings out the charm of this rhythm. Alarippu is most valuable in freeing the dancer from distraction and making her single-minded.  A total of 175 alarippus are possible with permutations and combinations of different thaalams, nadais and gathis.
