It is coupled with the principles of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry The chromatography utilizes a capillary column which depends on the column's dimensions (length, diameter, film thickness) as well as the phase properties (e.g. 5% phenyl polysiloxane). Then it is seperated by elution technique. Then the eluent is bombarded with a series of electrons in the ionization chamber and then detected by quadrupole or ion trap system Slide 6: INSTRUMENTATION Slide 7: GC-MS STATIONARY PHASE MOBILE PHASE DETECTORS MASS SPECTROMETER Slide 8: STATIONARY PHASE Present as coils wound together present in an oven. The stationary phase is made of polysiloxane and the other coupled layers of other materials like Slide 9: OPEN GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY Slide 10: STATIONARY PHASE OVEN Slide 11: MOBILE PHASE The mobile phase is mainly a gas. The gas must be inert or should possess specific properties to meet the standards. Generally nitrogen is employed. Slide 13: ELUTION TECHNIQUE Slide 14: DETECTORS THE ANALYSIS IS CARRIED OUT IN TWO MODES FULL SCAN MS SIM Slide 15: IONIZATION IONIZATION CHAMBER Slide 16: CHEMICAL IONIZATION The molecule is reacted with a specific compound like methane , ammonia which can split it into ionic fragments.
