The preterite tells you about an action that started and ended at a definite time….specific actions at specific points in time….actions that were done a specific number of times.:

Viajé a Costa Rica el verano pasado. I traveled to Costa Rica last summer. Viajé a España tres veces . I traveled to Spain three times. Comieron una pizza anoche. They ate a pizza last night .

The imperfect tells about past actions without saying when they begin or end….actions done repeatedly or habitually for an unspecified amount of time.:
