Premium member Presentation Transcript Motivations or PURUSHARTHA : Motivations or PURUSHARTHA The Behaviour Tree : The Behaviour Tree Leaves, flowers and fruits Branches Trunk BEHAVIOUR VALUES MOTIVATIONS ATTITUDE Roots The roots lie in our motives : The roots lie in our motives To modify behaviour we can do grafting and work on attitude or even values. But for honest change, and to take full responsibility of our behaviour we need to learn how and where is it rooted. The roots lie in our motives. Think about it : Think about it ‘Check your motives’ we say. What is there to check in it? Only we ourselves know our motives. It is an inner thing. Besides how does it matter? What are the motives that one must have in order to lead a healthy, happy and peaceful life? What you should have : What you should have Our ancient shastras have given us guidance on this. It says there are 4 purusharthas or motivations which one should have. Dharm artha kama and moksha. Slide 6: Dharma is duty, self direction, purpose in life, etc. Artha is livelihood. At different stages in life there are different ways of earning your living. ‘There is no free lunch’ as is said. Slide 7: Kama is recreation, enjoyment, relaxation, relations, pleasure , entertainment etc. Moksha is doing selfless work. Giving back to the society. The traditional business people made wealth to serve the larger humanity. The tax was introduced to do common good. Slide 8: An individual has to do something for fulfilment of each motivation everyday. Slide 9: Initially there is more of dharma and kama related activity that one is involved in. As one grows up the artha becomes more and kama becomes less. For those who continue to evolve the artha and kama time gradually reduces and dharma and moksha takes over. Finally even dharma reduces only moksha prevails. Four Ashrams : Four Ashrams As students kama and dharma. As family person dharma and artha As vanaprasth dharma and moksha. As sanyas it is all moksha. Slide 11: While you are doing what ever routine check the motive you have while taking up that action. Repeated practice will help clarity of motives.
