They are: Solid-Solid mixture Liquid-Liquid mixture Solid - Liquid mixture Complex mixture There are two nature of mixtures generally. They are: 1.Homogenous Mixture 2.Heterogenous MixtureSEPARATION OF MIXTURES: SEPARATION OF MIXTURES Processes of Separation of two Solid-Solid mixtures: 1.By Magnetic Separation-This is only possible when one of the component is magnetic. A magnet is placed near the mixture and the magnetic component is separated as separated as shown below:SEPARATION OF MIXTURES: SEPARATION OF MIXTURES 2.By Sublimation- In this process, the solid state of matter directly changes into gaseous state of matter. For this method one component should be sublime and on heating the mixture is separated. The picture below shows the above process:SEPARATION OF MIXTURE: SEPARATION OF MIXTURE Processes of separation of two Liquid-Liquid mixtures: 1.By Distillation- If the liquid in the mixture are miscible and have different boiling points then they can be separated by distillation. Complete separation is possible if the b.p of the liquid differ by 30 degree C or more.SEPARATION OF MIXTURES: SEPARATION OF MIXTURES 2. By Separating Funnel- If the liquids are miscible then they are put in a separating funnel then it will separate the mixture of two liquids into two distinct layers.SEPARATION OF MIXTURES: SEPARATION OF MIXTURES Processes of separation of Solid-Liquid mixture: 1.By Filtration- This process is only applicable when solid is insoluble in the liquid and thus forms a heterogeneous mixture. By Evaporation-This method is suitable when one of the component is a soluble solid and the other a liquid that forms a homogenous solution with that solid component.
