Today , in an era of architectural pluralism, and of engineering innovation, its use is being taken to new level of expression and technical sophistication. Fascination of architects and engineers with the outstanding design opportunities offered by stainless steel. CASE STUDIES.. : CASE STUDIES.. La Geode, Paris, France Walt Disney Concert Hall Los Angeles Lisbon Metro and train Orient station steel structures for long spans, Water cube La Geode, Paris, France : La Geode, Paris, France La Geode, Paris, France : La Geode, Paris, France Paris, France, 1985 Architect: Adrien Fainsilber Engineer: multicub/Acieroid La Geode, Paris, France : La Geode, Paris, France Is an ultra modern cinema. Has a mirror like finish and is sited at the centre of a reflecting pool. The ceiling and the whole inner structure are supported by a massive central concrete pier. The pier is supported by cantilever arms which support transverse beams. La Geode, Paris, France : La Geode, Paris, France Section showing main concrete pier and cantilevers Slide 8: Cross section through roof construction Primary structural support to geodesic dome is Provided by a fire protected tubular steel Structure. Slide 9: Triangles created by the primary Tubular steel frames View showing aluminum frames A series of aluminium upstands are Bolted to the nodes of the tubular steel frame and protrude through the water proofing membrane. The cladding is a mosaic of 6433 doubly curved triangular plates. Slide 10: Erection of stainless steel skin Triangular plates arranged onto aluminium frame Walt Disney Concert Hall Los Angeles : Walt Disney Concert Hall Los Angeles Walt Disney Concert Hall Los Angeles : Walt Disney Concert Hall Los Angeles The Walt Disney Concert Hall is a state of the art concert facility. The vary unusual shape and architectural characteristics of this structure, imposed an unprecedented amount of engineering efforts. The Walt Disney Concert Hall is been designed as world class concert hall with a seating capacity of 2380 seats. Walt Disney Concert Hall Los Angeles : Walt Disney Concert Hall Los Angeles The project has a total floor area of approx. 270,000 sq. ft. and consist of eight elements 1. The concert hall including the wrapper and east and west stair tower 2. West atrium 3. Pre concert area 4. East lobby and foyer 5. East atrium 6. Conductor’s office 7. Building base 8. The founder’s room Walt Disney Concert Hall Los Angeles : Walt Disney Concert Hall Los Angeles The exterior enclosure is a unified composition of metal clad sail like planes connected by panels of aluminum and glass curtain wall and skylights. The structure system for the concert hall is a complex set of interconnected steel braced frame and trusses. Originally, a structural steel moment frame system was envisioned for the project but due to the previous earthquake experience a braced frame alternative was substituted. Walt Disney Concert Hall Los Angeles : Walt Disney Concert Hall Los Angeles The difficulty in utilizing steel moment frame system for this structure is particularly due to the fact that most of “ beams and columns “ of the structure intersect at non-orthogonal angles. In more cases structural straight and curved members intersect at odd angles at a single point in space. Steel and glass cladding : Steel and glass cladding Steel staircase views : Steel staircase views External cladding fixation detail view : External cladding fixation detail view Slide 19: Street views Lisbon Metro and train Orient station : Lisbon Metro and train Orient station Lisbon Metro and train Orient station : Lisbon Metro and train Orient station One of the most stunning modern sights in Lisbon. Was built by master architect Santiago Calatrava with a roof of glass and steel made to look like a row of trees. It houses a railway station, a metro, and a bus terminal. Lisbon Metro and train Orient station : Lisbon Metro and train Orient station Completed in: 1998 Status: in use Location: Lisbon, Portugal Structural Type: Truss roof gothic structure Function / usage: Railroad station Lisbon Metro and train Orient station : Lisbon Metro and train Orient station Construction materials used roof steel substructure reinforced concrete Dimensions width 68 m length 313 m Bird’s eye view : Bird’s eye view Slide 25: The elevated train platforms The train station platform is raised above grade so that streets could run underneath the railway. The structural elements are painted stark white. Traditional approach is truss system, which organizes the steel pipes with triangular units, and systematic joint systems have been developed as in Fig. Slide 32: “Beans Dome” recently completed in Hyogo, Japan, which covers three tennis courts with planted roof with very light artificial ground. National Swimming Pool Gymnasium / Beijing : National Swimming Pool Gymnasium / Beijing They have a space frame of free-formed hexagon layout accommodate with its “Bubble” façade, however fully welded joints are required because of the structures are not composed of triangular units. “Birds Nest” stadium : “Birds Nest” stadium The main stadium for Beijing Olympic called “Birds Nest” also employs the free-formed structure, however, the traditional truss frames are introduced inside the structure to resolve the structural irrationality. Slide 36: The development of computer-aided shape-creating techniques supports such designs, however, development of systematic joint system for such free-form structures are desired for practical constructions. STEEL STRUCTURES FOR SAFETY : STEEL STRUCTURES FOR SAFETY As a forementioned, many Asian countries including Japan is placed in high-seismic and typhoon zones, and passively vibration control techniques mitigating such disaster using low-yield strength steel dampers have been remarkably developed in these 20 years. Slide 38: One of the most popular elements is “Buckling Restrained Braces (BRB)”, which comprise a steel core plate restrained by a concrete in-filled tube Slide 39: Developed for practice in the 1980’s in Japan, BRBs have been employed in more than two hundred buildings as ductile bracing members or hysteretic dampers. Distributed in steel frames, these members dissipate the introduced seismic energy, and minimize the damages of main structures and building facilities. Slide 40: Building Façade after the Retrofit BEIJING WATER CUBE : BEIJING WATER CUBE NATIONAL AQUATICS CENTRE, BEIJING Introduction : Introduction The National Aquatics Centre in Beijing marks a new beginning in design thinking . The structure of the Water Cube is based on the most effective sub-division of three-dimensional space - the fundamental arrangement of organic cells and the natural formation of soap bubbles. Slide 43: Venue: National Aquatics Center Location: Olympic Green Total land surface: 79,532 sq m Seats: 6,000 permanent and 11,000 temporary Competitions: Swimming, Diving, Synchronized Swimming Groundbreaking date: December 24, 2003 Completion date: January 28, 2008 Client: People’s Government of Beijing Municipality, Beijing SAM Architects: PTW + CCDI + ARUP Slide 44: It will be clad in ETFE foil cushions which have excellent insulation properties and will create a greenhouse effect. Slide 49: THE STRUCTURE IS MADE OF APPROXIMATELY 6500 TONNES OF STEEL . THERE ARE 22,000 STEEL MEMBERS AND 12,000 NODES . THE STEEL BEAMS WOULD STRETCH FOR 90KMS . The internal structure of the Water Cube Steel structure inside the Water Cube Diving platform Slide 50: The structure of the building is so strong that it can be stood up on its end and retains its shape . The overall size is 177x177x31m . Adopted compact sections, which allowed plastic ductility to be taken advantage of under level three seismic loading.
