Hatchery Grown Algae : Hatchery Grown Algae We grow our own algae to feed our oyster larvae and seed. As algae grows it gets more concentrated and ends up in a continuous bag system followed by a continuous batch system in tanks. Oyster Larvae : Oyster Larvae Oyster larvae at approximately 15 days from fertilization using our own carefully selected brood stock. Larvae will develop an “eye spot” and a “foot”. This foot will “set” on cultch, or a powder-like substance consisting of ground cultch, by secreting a cement-like substance and become permanently bonded. Cultch : Cultch Cultch is recycled oyster shells. We recycle all of our oyster shells. When free swimming larvae “set” on cultch it is known as “spat”. Notice all the small dark spots – oysters are beginning to take shape. Setting Tanks : Setting Tanks Putting cultch into oyster larvae setting tanks. The Nursery : The Nursery Once removed from the setting tanks, oysters continue to grow in “Nursery Beds” along the inter tidal shoreline before being planted. Growing Oyster Seed : Growing Oyster Seed “Down-Well” and “Up-Well” systems are used to feed and grow oyster and clam seed for our own use and sold to other growers. Oyster Seed : Oyster Seed Clam Seed : Clam Seed 2 Farming Methods : 2 Farming Methods On Bottom & Off Bottom (also known as Long Line) On Bottom Farming : On Bottom Farming Off Bottom (Long Line) Farming : Off Bottom (Long Line) Farming Harvesting : Harvesting Fleet of Boats : Fleet of Boats Our jet-driven boats allow us to harvest in as little as 2 feet of water. We can conduct our farming and harvesting activities for a longer period of time without being dependent on the tide. South Bend Processing : South Bend Processing Pacific Oysters are brought to our South Bend facility where they are unloaded from the harvest vessels, processed and packaged. South Bend Processing : South Bend Processing Oysters are unloaded from the harvest vessels onto a conveyer system which takes them into the processing plant to get shucked or processed for live in-shell sale. Shucking : Shucking An oyster shucker can shuck up to 5,000 oysters per shift!
