World News : 

World News 1919- 18th Amendment – Prohibition (U.S.) 1920- 19th Amendment – Women’s Suffrage (U.S.) 1922- Mussoloni becomes prime minister of Italy 1922- Gandhi sent to jail for resisting to accept British control of India 1923- Beer Hall Putsch – Hitler and his storm troopers attempt to gain control. 16 of his men were shot by the police and Hitler was arrested and sent to jail 1927- the Nationalists, under Chiang Kai-shek, gain control of China Quit

Business : 

Business Businesses mass produced motor vehicles, etc. making it easier and cheaper to provide goods The creation of the middle class lead to mass consumption of these goods Everybody was buying everything, and with more and more houses were wired for electricity so consumer appliances became popular toasters, washing machines, refrigerators Quit

Sports : 

Sports Sports gained popularity during the Roaring Twenties, and the 1920s is often referred to as the Golden Age of Sports. Horse racing- Man O’War wins 20 of his 21 races 1922- Ralph Samuelson invents waterskiing 1926- Gertrude Ederle becomes the first woman to swim the English Channel 1927- Babe Ruth sets record with 60 home runs for the year Quit

Transportation : 

Transportation Automobiles used more and more for vacation transportation as they became more affordable. Trains and ocean liners were the main forms of mass transportation. Airplanes became larger and more reliable, but air travel was still in its beginning stages. Quit

Entertainment : 

Entertainment New technology allowed movies to have both sound and color, so Hollywood grew quickly. The first radio broadcast ever was in November of 1920. 1921 marked the first year of the Miss America pageant. Quit

Agriculture : 

Agriculture In the 1920s, agricultural exports accounted for $1.94 billion/year (42% of total exports). 1928- Future Farmers of America founded In 1920, there were only 225 tractors in America, but by 1930 almost every farmer had one. This meant increased production and less time needed to plant, care for, and harvest the crops. Quit

Jazz : 

Jazz Jazz was the music of choice during the Roaring Twenties. It was born in New Orleans, but soon spread to the rest of the United States, and then on to the world. Some of the best known musicians were Duke Ellington, Al Jolson, and Louis Armstrong. The best known composer was George Gershwin. Many jazz musicians were African Americans. Quit

Art : 

Art The Harlem Renaissance began in 1920 bringing, among other things, new African American art. Disney created Mickey Mouse in 1928. Museum of Modern Art in NYC is opened in 1929. Art movements included the modernist movement, abstract impressionism, surrealism, dadaism, and realism. Quit

Flappers : 

Flappers The Roaring Twenties introduced a new style of women. These “flappers” shocked much of the older generation by their appearance and attitude: Flappers danced, drank, and smoked. They had short, “bobbed” haircuts and wore make-up. The hemlines of their dresses came up to their knees and they wore stockings. They were reckless and risk-taking. Quit

Everyday Life : 

Everyday Life Baseball and other sports gained popularity. 1920 marked the first year that more people were living in cities than on farms. Families spent evenings listening to the radio. Due to mass production of goods, ordinary American families could but what were once inaccessible luxuries. More women began working outside the home. Quit
