Introduction to the Host Setting:

Introduction to the Host Setting Location: Kissimmee Middle School (KMS), Ms. Kunz’ Varied Exceptionalities (VE) Class AYP information for KMS: 99% of Students with disabilities were tested in reading and only 33% of those students read at or above grade level. 28% of those students tested seem to be on track to be proficient in reading. Demographics of KMS: 75% Hispanic, 8% Black, 13% White, 3% Asian and 4% other. 189 students with disabilities make up 16% of school population

Engagement Activities:

Engagement Activities The community need was to work with students with disabilities on reading skills. Activities included readings, discussions and a final performance of the Reader’s Theater Met with class at least twice a week

Participant Demographics:

Participant Demographics 11-15 year old students, 18% Black, 81% Hispanic. 1 student has bipolar disorder, 1 student has Emotional or Behavioral Disorder, 75% SLD, 25% Intellectual Disabilities. Considered to be persons with disabilities because they have been found to have disabilities that result in the student needing additional or different services to participate in school. Each student has an IEP. I.D.E.A. Title I, Part A, Section 602 defines “child with a disability” as a child “with mental retardation, hearing impairments (including deafness), speech or language impairments, visual impairments (including blindness), serious emotional disturbance (referred to in this title as `emotional disturbance'), orthopedic impairments, autism, traumatic brain injury, other health impairments, or specific learning disabilities; and “-who, by reason thereof, needs special education and related services. “ Total of 11 students

Civic Engagement:

Civic Engagement I look at civic engagement as a way to connect Purpose- understanding, relationship, tolerance As a method of learning- more beneficial to books It motivated me to become more involved I would encourage teachers/students to engage in service learning due to the benefits of hands on experiences
