Why is vocabulary important? Most of the hard questions on the Critical Reading section are hard because the vocabulary is hard. Every word you know makes those questions easier.

Step 2: Flashcards:
Step 2: Flashcards Get some small index cards and start making flashcards whenever you come across an unfamiliar word. At the end of the day, put the new flashcards on a desk and review all the words. When you know a word, put it in a separate “mastered” pile and review them just once a week. Use mnemonics to help memorize the words. Draw a funny sketch of the word. Make up a funny sentence with the word.

Step 4: READ!:
Step 4: READ! Students who do well on the reading section are readers. They read a lot. If that’s not you, it’s not too late. Start now! Any classic novel will do. Underline unfamiliar words when you come across them, and then go back and make flashcards for them. You can also purchase Kaplan’s “SAT-Score Raising Classics” which have the hard words defined on every page of the novel.
