Super Moon – March 19 - 2011

The moon will swing around the Earth after almost 20 years and will be closest to the Earth.:

On March 19, a rare lunar event will bring the full moon unusually close to the Earth. :

On March 19, a rare lunar event will bring the full moon unusually close to the Earth.

Slide 4:

Even though it may look close enough to touch, the full moon will still be at a healthy distance -- some 221,567 miles (356,577 km) away.

Slide 5:

Moreover, the moon will appear about 14% larger than normal in size when it rises in the sky.

What is a Supermoon?:

What is a Supermoon ? Supermoon is a situation when the moon is slightly closer to Earth in its orbit than on average, this phenomenon is also called lunar perigee .

Slide 7:

“Supermoon effect is most noticeable when it occurs at the same time as a full moon," Garvin wrote in the NASA statement. "So, the moon may seem bigger although the difference in its distance from Earth is only a few percent at such times.” Dr. James B. Garvin is NASA's Chief Scientist

Slide 8:

Full moons look different because of the elliptical shape of the moon's orbit. When it's at perigee, the moon is about 31,000 miles (50,000 km) closer to Earth than when it's at the farthest point of its orbit, also known as apogee.

Slide 9:

The closest the Moon gets – known as the perigee – is around 364,000km, and the farthest – the apogee – is around 406,000km.

Slide 11:

Will the March 19 th ' Supermoon ' Trigger Natural Disasters ?

Slide 12:

Most natural disasters have nothing to do with the moon at all. The Earth has a lot of pent up energy, and it releases it anytime the buildup gets too great. The supermoon probably won't push it past the tipping point, but people will know for sure, one way or the other, by March 20 th .

Slide 13:

However, while hoping for a non-disastrous ‘moon giant’, point your eyes and camera lenses toward the night sky on 19 th March. If the sky is clear, you’re gonna get an exceptional treat. Miss it and you'll have to wait until 2029 to see it again….
